This week residents of Konin, Poland tried to show some hometown pride by putting a condom on a phallic fountain sculpture. While other towns get excited about having a giant wheel of cheese or the world's oldest windmill, Konin's claim to fame is being the birthplace of Julius Fromm, who invented the latex condom in 1912. The group Action Konin hoped to draw attention to his achievement by placing a bag on the statue, but the mayor called the group an embarrassment and Catholic leaders complained that their religion doesn't approve of condoms. Locals may not be pleased, but Konin is now known on the internet as a town worth saluting.
