Rutgers Introduces Gender-Neutral Housing After Student Suicide

Latest

In the wake of freshman Tyler Clementi’s suicide, Rutgers University is making gender-neutral housing available to some students. The university hopes to create a better environment for LGBT students, although the program will be open to straight applicants as well. Says senior Aaron Lee,

We live in a world where in order to be considered a human being you have to be male or female, and not everyone fits into that kind of binary. It’s important to have spaces where people don’t necessarily have to worry.

Unfortunately, Clementi would not have been able to benefit from the new housing — it won’t be open to freshman.
