The White House may be wowed at Obama's win, but the commentary is flying fast and furious. Who's saying what, after the jump.
Who: The Taliban
They Say: "We have seen no change in his strategy for peace. He has done nothing for peace in Afghanistan," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told AFP on Friday.
We Say: Seriously? And since when is the Taliban the authority on peace?
Who: Marrti Ahtisaari, Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2008
They Say:"We do not yet have a peace in the Middle East ... this time it was very clear that they wanted to encourage Obama to move on these issues. This is a clear encouragement to do something on this issue; I wish him good luck."
We Say: Umm...we thought you had to resolve something before you win the prize. We could be wrong though.
Who: Saeb Erekat, chief Palestinian peace negotiator
They Say: "We hope that he will be able to achieve peace in the Middle East and achieve Israeli withdrawal to 1967 borders and establish an independent Palestinian state on 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as its capital."
We Say: Way to pimp your talking points.
Who: Ben Brogan of the Telegraph
They Say: "They could have awarded it to Kylie Minogue and I wouldn't have been half as surprised."
We Say: Haters never prosper.
Who: Peter Beinart in The Daily Beast
They Say: "By giving him the Nobel Prize as a kind of "atta boy," the Nobel Committee is actually just highlighting the gap that conservatives have long highlighted: between Obamamania as global hype and Obama's actual accomplishments."
We Say: Okay, we'll give him props for the "pre-emptive peace" line.
Who: Ana Marie Cox on Twitter
They Say: "Apparently Nobel prizes now being awarded to anyone who is not George Bush."
We Say: Farai Chideya said it better.
Who: Farai Chideya on Twitter
They Say: In other words, the prize seems to be "thank God you're not trying to be a big swinging dick of a unilateral superpower"
We Say: We're laughing too hard to comment.
Who: Michael Steele
They Say: "The real question Americans are asking is, What has President Obama actually accomplished?"
We Say: We know you aren't over there talking about accomplishments when they have you on a leash. Mofo, what game are you playing with yourself?
Who: Michael Binyon, the Times of London
They Say: Rarely has an award had such an obvious political and partisan intent. It was clearly seen by the Norwegian Nobel committee as a way of expressing European gratitude for an end to the Bush Administration, approval for the election of America's first black president and hope that Washington will honour its promise to re-engage with the world. Instead, the prize risks looking preposterous in its claims, patronising in its intentions and demeaning in its attempt to build up a man who has barely begun his period in office, let alone achieved any tangible outcome for peace.
We Say: Is the Audacity of Hope So Wrong?
Who:David Ignatius in the Washington Post
They Say: "The Nobel committee is expressing a collective sigh of relief that America has rejoined the global consensus. They're right. It's a good thing. It's just a little weird that they gave him a prize for it."
We Say: So this is really America's prize for having Presidential terms max out at two?
HECKLER'S WINNER CIRCLE![]()
Who: Corey Richardson (VexedintheCity) on Twitter
They Say: "Barack, you president and all,and I'ma let you you finish. But Martin Luther King is the greatest Nobel prize winner EVER!"
We Say: And fin, Kanye.
Who: Farai Chideya on Twitter
They Say: "Because the world community was tired of hearing us debate healthcare and thought we might pull it together now."
We Say: Yes, please!
Who: Melisssa Harris Lacewell on Twitter
They Say: "Because he didn't smack Joe Wilson."
We Say: True!
