Miriam Makeba, the South African singer exiled after speaking out against apartheid, died today after suffering a heart attack at a concert in Italy. Known as "Mama Afrika," Makeba, 76, brought African music to a global audience, but she said she did not consider herself a political singer. "People think I consciously decided to tell the world what was happening in South Africa," she said in an interview this year. "No! I was singing about my life, and in South Africa we always sang about what was happening to us — especially the things that hurt us."
