If Joan Holloway existed in 2008, she most certainly would be queen bee among her gay male friends. But Joan in 1962 is much too conventional for that. Peggy Olson, however, is a nonconformist, who rejects the religion she was raised with, and breaks gender barriers at her job. It makes sense that on last night's episode of Mad Men she became interested in bonding with Kurt, the cultured foreign guy who bravely came out of the closet. And it makes sense that Kurt, Sterling-Cooper's resident taste-maker, would give Peggy the queer eye, and help her to modernize her look, thus enabling her to look on the outside how she really is on the inside: the modern American working woman.
