This morning, while we should have been industriously searching through images of last night's gowns, we were seduced by this teeny tiny little endangered Chinese box turtle, who just hatched at Bristol Zoo. Box turtles are hunted for their meat for use in medicine or as pets, and have been listed as endangered on the International Union for Endangered Species Red List - which means its condition is critical. The turtle is currently "smaller than a matchbox" and a mere 0.53oz but can grow as large as 28.2oz and live to be as old as 50. A zoo spokesman says the little guy, ensconced in the Reptile House, is "eating plenty and growing stronger every day". [BBC]
