Only 45% of smokers put down the Camels because they're pregnant, according to USA Today. But of that 45% who quit (usually cold turkey because nicotine gums and patches are not recommended for expectant moms), 80% start smoking again within a year of giving birth because of the stress of new motherhood. "Cigarettes are tempting for mothers trying to lose their pregnancy weight and stay mentally sharp, in spite of waking up every two hours to feed their babies," USA Today notes. Smoking cessation counseling is key in helping women give up the ciggies for good, because research has shown that even three minutes of counseling from a doctor can double a woman's chances of kicking the habit.
