@KathrynwithaY loves Joan Collins: Okay, with a second look, she's still kinda hovering in old bag lady territory: long-ish khaki skirt and Keds? Either way, I feel conflicted and not sure whether she's on trend or out her damn mind.
I call Ashley on this one, she's starting to wear her hair straight and not in her face. She looks really different to me when she does that. Maybe it's cuz I didn't know she had sticky-out ears? I'm loving this more low key look.
@arodriguez.romero:I love longer skirts. Hard to find because I'm tall, but I don't like the tiresome effort of keeping my legs demurely crossed or keeping my knees mashed tightly together.
I don't care if they're demode. I just want to be lazy while not showing the world my yimyam.
@arodriguez.romero: No. I don't really like short skirts, either. You just have to be mindful of making sure the shoes are the right shape for the line of the skirts, don't wear a monochromatic look if the skirt is ankle length, and avoid the mid-calf length at all costs.
@robot ninja spy: Haha! I love hearing about other peoples' skirt tricks.
I cut most of the length off of those barely-there sheer stretchy cotton knit Target gauchos and wear them under skirts. Like, always. They don't constrict like Spanx and they alleviate chub rub.
I decided a long time ago that my ass was a force of nature unto itself, and I was better off making gentle suggestions to it rather than coralling it.
More on topic: Can someone please identify the besuited boy in this photo? I'd like to make gentle suggestions to his ass.
@arodriguez.romero: They're just really difficult to pull off a lot of the time, depending on the shape of the skirt and the type of shoe.
I have a closet full of them that I never wear because I don't have the right shoes. :( Fortunately most of them are second-hand, so I'm not kicking myself too hard about buying them.
@robot ninja spy: Okay, I'll totes agree with you there. A-lines tend to look a little bit less like the length is intentional. They can be more flowy and balletic, depending on your interpretation.
A shaped, slim pencil skirt that falls truly to the mid-calf area (like, way past the knee) just looks like bad tailoring.
At least Unidentified Frumpy Olson (UFO) here looks like she just threw on some earth tones that vaguely matched. The O-faced brunette next to her looks like she picked out that weird print on PURPOSE.
@robot ninja spy:Have you seen tight straight skirts in the last couple seasons anywhere? I like skirts like Kim Novak wore in Vertigo, but I don't shop anywhere more expensive than Macy's.
I had a coworker once who told me I was really brave to wear skirts below the knee. She said it always made her look "fresh off the boat" but I managed to look bohemian and nice (or something). This remark was like some kind of riddle. My brow furrows when I think of it.
@arodriguez.romero: Pencil skirts with high heels is a timeless classic. I love it. (I can't pull it off myself, however. Too much junk in my trunk.)
I agree with robot ninja spy that mid-calf can be a dangerous length because it can make one look stumpy. But a pencil skirt that hits below the knee is perfect. A good place to look for pencil skirts is Club Monaco. As for their prices, they do have excellent sales, and they ALWAYS have sales.
It's Ashley. I've been (lamely) studying them for about five years now. Her hair is about the same as the other night at the Gala AND it's relatively clean, no heels, and she looks far too Calvin Klein-ish too be Mary-Kate. MK is waaay more Givenchy than Calvin, even in her off days. Wow. I cannot believe I actually just said all of that out loud.
@raleigh likes swaddling: I still to this day have NO idea how people tell them apart. I guess...props to you for your skills? Haha. I would never have had any idea.
@shiningstar: @raleigh likes swaddling: To my extreme shame I must report I am also one hundred percent certain it's Ashley. I have reached a point where I actually don't even think they look that much alike. Damn you, celebrity blogs! Damn you all to hell!
@PilgrimSoul: I feel like, if you see them actually side by side, they have COMPLETELY different faces.
That, or I'm so well-versed in the frequent and hilarious montages that they always employed in their childhood films that I would be embarrassed if I couldn't tell them apart.
I'm short, and for some reason mid-calf skirts look better on me than knee length. Knee length cuts my too-short line in half and makes me look stumpy.
Sadly, pencil skirts aren't practical for me because I hardly wear heels outside of work and I'm always worried I won't look professional in them at work because I have a big ass. :) It's great, just not for work.
I always see great ones at Sisley/Benneton, though, and they have good sales, too.
@PilgrimSoul: @Shawn-Shawn: Yes! They look absolutely nothing alike! Put them side by side and they look totes different. And they aren't identical twins. I even find myself getting angry at blogs that get them mixed up.

It's gotta be MK- because of the nose. And now I am going to go burn my grad degree, because I know this information.
i feel like this is going to be a cell phone ad- more bars in more places!
Well, at least Unidentified Olsen Twin isn't dressed like a bag lady. That's a step in the right direction.
Do you believe in UOTs?
There is no way that's an Olsen twin. It's a well known fact they don't leave the house without fourteen layers of clothing.
It's actually both of them. Mary Kate's carrying Ashley in her bag.
I know it's an olsen because of the old lady hemline on that skirt. My 80 year old grandma has shorter skirts than that.
OMFG, flats!
This is extremely Lands' End for Sears for her, isn't it?
This is the sort of thing I was forced to wear to my private Christian high school. Nary a hint of kneecap.
@KathrynwithaY loves Joan Collins: Okay, with a second look, she's still kinda hovering in old bag lady territory: long-ish khaki skirt and Keds? Either way, I feel conflicted and not sure whether she's on trend or out her damn mind.
@KathrynwithaY loves Joan Collins: The two aren't mutually exclusive. :)
All I could think when I saw the picture was, I wonder if that guy is hot. The back of his head looks like he might be hot.
So I'm horny today. Sue me.
My cousin (who is my fashion icon) gets on my case about long skirts for short people. I hate showing knees. Am I wrong?
@lurkystars: I thought the same thing! I was thinking he's looking pretty good, but I have to see the front to make a complete judgement.
so, keds with baggy pencil skirts are in for spring? fabulous.
@lurkystars: It's the combination of the well-tailored suit and the Converse that is making me feel funny in the pants.
I like that she has a little bit of the bitch-face going on, as opposed to the patented "Olson Scared Lil' Bunny Rabbit" look they usually sport.
@DorothyZbornak:
You win. That was genius.
It's definitely Ashley though. You can tell by how clean her hair is.
Also? I think I've seen every single episode of Two of a Kind at least 5 times. Sorry, but that show was damn delightful.
@arodriguez.romero: I think it's about the shape of the skirt and the shoes you choose to go with it.
@lurkystars:Ha! I thought the same thing!
I call Ashley on this one, she's starting to wear her hair straight and not in her face. She looks really different to me when she does that. Maybe it's cuz I didn't know she had sticky-out ears? I'm loving this more low key look.
I'm gonna go tell my Grandma that an Olsen is dressing like her. Oh, wait. We've had that conversation before.
@mightymouth: I'll buy that for a dollar. I like tight straight skirts with high heels so I prefer no knees showing.
@DorothyZbornak: hahahahaha. fantastic. The bag is looking a little flat though, MK must have left her furs at home.
@arodriguez.romero: No. I don't really like short skirts, either. You just have to be mindful of making sure the shoes are the right shape for the line of the skirts, don't wear a monochromatic look if the skirt is ankle length, and avoid the mid-calf length at all costs.
@tscheese: And I'm a grown woman who will still wear shorts under dresses.
Those $6 H&M booty shorts are my new best friends. :)
I see she's dressed for the early bird special and a night of bingo.
@robot ninja spy: Why do you dislike mid-calf? Is it just too old fashioned looking?
@robot ninja spy: Haha! I love hearing about other peoples' skirt tricks.
I cut most of the length off of those barely-there sheer stretchy cotton knit Target gauchos and wear them under skirts. Like, always. They don't constrict like Spanx and they alleviate chub rub.

Mid-calf pencil skirts seem not to work so well. A-lines are okay, though.
@tscheese: That's
smart. Thanks for the tip! I was wondering what I'd do once I wore out my shorts.
@J.D.Regent: At least it's an easier trend to rock than a micro mini-dress and 9 inch Balenciaga platforms, right?
Also, I'm totally biased, because no matter what she wears, I think that Ashley is effortlessly chic.
@robot ninja spy: Okay, I'll totes agree with you there. A-lines tend to look a little bit less like the length is intentional. They can be more flowy and balletic, depending on your interpretation.

@mightymouth: club monaco great I never looked in there before! tnx
I love the gingerly crossed wrists. The Olsens always hold themselves like their bones are going to break.
@TheUptightMidwesterner: ha ha! I LOVE that look. I wanna see the spread in US Weekly: "I don't go anywhere without...my scared lil bunny rabbit face"
