Talk about ice queens on the Today show: This morning, Heather B. Armstrong met with Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford to talk about her award-winning, groundbreaking blog Dooce — is it just me or doesn't it seem a bit unfair to call it a "Mom Blog"? — and sat on the couch with her arms crossed the entire time, looking cold. (In temperature, not in spirit.) Maybe she was simply preparing herself for Kathie Lee's line of questioning. About three minutes into the interview, Kathie Lee admitted that she has "mixed emotions" about Armstrong's chosen line of work, then quickly changed the subject to tease the show's next segment about home decorating. Clip above.

Comments
I have a coworker who is obsessed with this blog. All I know is that she's an ex-moron on meds.
Sounds good to me.
Wierd. I have "mixed emotions" about Kathie Lee's return to morning television. Hmmm
You know, this is strikingly similar to the anti-Deadspin feeling that's floating around in the sports journalism world. Do women-oriented blogs threaten talk shows like these in the same way? I wonder...
You're right, Anna. It's a Shit Ass-Ho Motherfucker blog, not a "mom blog."
I would like to reiterate my previous comment on how I would like to see Hoda kick Kathy Lee's ass..
i can't watch this right now. please somebody tell me that her mixed emotions do *not* involve dooce writing about her daughter???!!!
Funny how Kathie Lee would be uncomfortable with Heather talking about her kid on her blog, yet all she did w/Regis was pimp out her precious children! And I didn't notice that Heather seemed cold...
REALLY KATHIE LEE?! "potty training is kind of private?"
I'm sure if I dust off some of my mother's VHS tapes of Regis and Kathie Lee shows from years past I could find you showing pictures of Cody sitting naked on a training potty.
This is the sort of biting "Today Show" tension we haven't seen since the days of Matt Lauer's glibness.
@hharlowe: They do involve that. I haven't read this blog - have to check it out. (Kathie Lee's looking more like Mariah Carey to me, o/t.)
Women's honesty can be threatening to many people for many reasons. I just am assuming that this is an example of that.
Haven't read the blog, but Kathie Lee just REALLY dated herself with that comment about fearing computers. Wow. Both of my 80+ year old grandmothers are more tech-savvy than that. She should have stopped talking at 'I really don't know enough to say...'
I can't watch the clip at work, but I'm really surprised that she is cold on tv. In one of her recent entries, she discusses her feelings about others' criticizing her writing about her daughter, and, like the rest of her blog, it was heartfelt, inappropriate and hilarious. Perhaps she just hates Kathie Lee like the rest of us...?
I don't understand how Kathie is worried about the Internets but not about what she's said on TELEVISION.
I can't believe someone gave Kathie Lee a TV job again. Can't we please stop encouraging her?!
@Jessi Ramsey: @obstinatebichon: Beat me to it. Kathie Lee whored out Cassie and Cody like 2 dollar hoes...why the self-righteousness now?
@boring diatribes: Actually, I think they mean temperature-cold rather than emotionally cold. She was holding her arms like it was chilly in there.
@Jessi Ramsey: No fucking kidding! The mommy blog content is exactly the same stuff KLG pimped out during her Regis & Kathie Lee days regarding the countless personal aspects of her home life.
@obstinatebichon: I'm sorry, you said what I posted (later.) I promise that wasn't showing...
I *hate* when people double-post the same dern idea.
Heather has talked a lot about the depression issues she has had on her website, and how it affected her family, and shes right - she's doing a lot more good by raising these topics than worrying about privacy.
And I totally wouldn't call it a mom blog either.
What seems weird to me is that you have people (like Kathy Lee) who are so out of touch with the concept of blogging and Internet trends and what have you doing these interviews, saying sort of ridiculous things, and instead of really interviewing her it's just the most general questions possible and "I don't understand computers" and misuse of the word "blogosphere".
Ugh, I don't like Dooce because I can't help feeling it's totally exploitative of her kid.
@hharlowe: Oh no. Of COURSE she went there.
christ, if i had a baby, i'd be on her (or similar) blog like a shot!
kathie lee, go back to the 80's. there is no place for you here, you shallow bint.
@kimsama: Argh, add to that:
...without any other redemptive content.
It's like Kathy Lee is saying, "I am judging you for your blog, but I don't know enough about it to eviscerate you on national television, so I'll just allude to my disapproval. Computers are hard!"
Dooce is awesome, she's the first blogger I started following regularly. And I can tell you she is a very nice (and funny) lady in person.
@kimsama: Why do you think that?
@jetmore: Hahahahaha...ha. Good christ, that sure took the piss out of my comment, didn't it? But yes, that makes much more sense!
It's so awesome to hear her voice! I've been reading her blog for three years now, and sometimes she posts videos where you can hear her, but nver three whole minutes!
I love Heather. Kathy Lee can bite me.
Kathy's not up on the "internets?" I would have never guessed. What a Republican.
@kimsama: Ah, ok. But that's not true, because she also talks extensively about her life, her marriage and her battle with bipolar. Are those not redemptive topics?
@Katie: I've been thinking I need to get onto a blog about motherhood that I can relate to (not the boards at BabyCenter where it's all, "Oh, my baby is so perfect, I love my life, I do nothing but think of my baby"). Hey, if a Jezzie's following her, she can't be bad.
Kathie Lee is a cunt. She had Kody and Kassidy (however you spell it) on that damn show all the time back in the day.
And she's just so smug about everything, even admitting she didn't know much about computers. Bitch.
I like reading Dooce and Heather seems like a great person. Let her do as she pleases!
@ItchykooParker: thanks! although, i'm now FULL of rage.
@kimsama: Aww, she has lots of stuff about her life on there, too. I read it before the focus had totally switched to Leta and she has some good essays on her crazy, crazy family and general self way back in the 'chives.
Dooce is hilarious and an ex-mormon not moron. Kathy Lee is the moron and it's sad that because she's on tv more people listen to her than to dooce.
@Kittenish: YES!!! Thank you. That bitch would drag her kids out on stage every other day. What an ignorant douche.
And that screen grab is awesome. It's like the Church Lady, but with A LOT of work done!
"I don't know much about computers, I just know about my fears about computers". Oh kathy Lee, come on leave something for the satorists.
@broad: dooce is a better woman than i am. i would've have beat her senseless while screaming "CASSIDY AND CODY, RUUUUUN!"
@kimsama: I have zero interest in having children, and yet I find plenty of "redeeming content" on dooce.com. Such as: depression and meds, her relationship to the Mormon Church and her largely Mormon family, writing and tech observations, and OMG PUPPIES.
@Katie: that is full of awesome.
I was just reading "dooce" and may I just say, I enjoyed it immensely. And ain't no babies jumping out of my orifices.
Kathie's jealous because she herself has no discernible talent. And she's a nasty cou*hypocrite!*gh
Lurve the Dooce!
Potty training is private?
Love Heather, love her dress, love her blog. Kathie Lee can bite me.
Dooce is very clever and I have none of the "mommy" stuff going on in my life. If I was though, I'd love to know about what a pain other people's kids are so that I'd feel less nervous about my own.
Also: given youtube, is anything really private anymore?
Dooce is insufferable. I don't think she's funny at all. She's funny in the bad sitcom-let's-say-poop way. That being said, Heather is laughing all the way to the bank. She clearly has figured out her racket.
I thought Heather showed incredible restraint and poise. If that'd been me, I'd have wanted to gauge KLG's hypocritical, judgmental eyes out of her decrepit, botoxed face.
I also have no interest in having kids of my own but I love Heather's site. I think her stories about Leta are often both funny and cute (and remind me a lot of my own mother, which I think is a good thing). Really though, she just seems like she'd be a fun chick to have a beer with, so that's why I read her.
Kathie Lee is a dick.
Kathie Lee is so irrelevant. Why would they have such an artifact interview a blogger?
It is painfully obvious that neither of these chicks are truly familiar with Heather's blog. Like the cheesy morning show host in 'Reality Bites' it appears they have merely perused index cards with a few choice quotes. I've followed her blog for years, and consider it more a 'lapsed-Mormon' blog (and that's comedy) than a 'Mom' blog. It's unfortunate that Heather's searing wit and tremendous intellect did not come across in this interview -she has the appearance of an uncomfortable multi-celled organism trapped in a Petri dish with two over-botoxed amoebas.
Gave her blog the once-over; really uninteresting but apparently not to others.
Gawd, Kathie Lee is one face lift and drinking problem away from becoming a crazy old embittered biddy! (I was gonna saw Joan Crawford but at least she has a sense of humor!) Who's idea was it to bring her back?! She was never that great, I think Regis really carried the show as has been proven by the success of Kelly Ripa... :P
Kathie Lee is like a spazzy Meredith Viera; just as judgmental but not as poised or sane.
I admit that I've had negative feelings about Heather mostly because when I started blogging, I wrote her a few time for advice/input and she never wrote back (yes, I'm one of those narcistic people who assumes that she will get a response from anyone).
She impressed in this interview. I still don't think that her blog is all that - she's not particularly prolific, she's somewhat funny but not Hysterical. She just got in really early and was smart from a business perspective.

I just can't believe that there are people who work in a professional entertainment/pop culture capacity that don't understand the concept of blogging. I don't care how old they are. It's so clear that Kathy Lee and Hoda don't quite get it and it makes me sad.
I'm not a regular reader of Dooce but I've read it a few times and I enjoy it for the same reasons that I enjoy a lot of blogs on my reader---it makes you realize that a lot of people are struggling with the same feelings and issues and situations that you are.
I don't get why KLG thinks this blog is any different from her constant yammering about her own damn kids for years and years on Regis.
Used to? Kathie Lee Gifford had Cassidy (or whoever, the girl) front and center on the the show for Take Your Kid to Work day last week! There was a whole schtick where the kid was joking with the cue cards. And she thinks writing on a blog is exploitative?
I used to read Dooce when I first had the kid. I just fell out of the habit but I really liked it then.
@kimsama: I have to agree that Heather gets a little exhibitionist at times. But I always try to remember that she's one of those people for whom getting out of bed in the morning is often a huge victory. And I don't really think her daughter is is in any danger, per se. Heather herself said it very well:
...but then they'd have to admit that when I take you to the grocery store I am exposing your face to hundreds of strangers, people who can see what car we drove up in, the license plate number, and the direction we head home. Maybe we shouldn't ever leave the house, otherwise? STRANGERS WILL KNOW WHAT WE LOOK LIKE.
