Looking Good, Elite!

Huh!? Despite supposedly massive turnout from Dittoheads, Barack Obama does not appear to be losing by huge margins (any more) in Indiana. Maybe Chris Hitchens didn't try hard enough to expose Obama's wife as the second coming of Angela Davis! Karl Rove is on Fox, crediting positive economic newsflow for Obama's win. (Because you would never vote for the candidate actually known for listening to economists unless you had evidence that the American economy was performing well without following a single piece of advice economists had ever given it!) Anyway, Hillary's campaign is looking imperiled. Mark Abinder thinks it's the new Great Schism! (Not to be confused with the New Decameron.) Barry is winning by a fourteen-point margin with everything but the racist vote favoring him.

"It's like the last time you take the pet to the vet..." CNN's Alex Castellanos just said of Hillary's campaign. Evocative! Indiana, where Clinton is winning but by narrowing margins (and beautiful downtown Gary has yet to report; Fox News seems to sense some sort of conspiracy at work but they're not giving me enough hints as to what the fuck they're hinting at) has 72 delegates at stake to North Carolina's 115.

  • Keep it over 60, you latte-slipping black elitists and it will be like PA never happened. Go O'Bama!

  • "take the pet to the vet" is a brilliant phrase for this.

(Even though I've, y'know, taken the pet to the vet a couple times in real life and it was in the top 10 shitty experiences of my life both times.)

@battleaxonista: If only we didn't need a state like PA to win a general

  • Old North State,
    I am beaming with pride!

I haven't had the time lately to get invested in crappy hour, but I'm ready tonight. Please let this thread be a good one!

  • This picture as not near as Facebook as Hillary's shot taking with the teamsters. But, um, go Obama!

  • Image of marin79 marin79 at 08:37 PM on 05/06/08 *

@BeckySharper: I've been living at the animal hospital lately! My baby girl got into Advil my sister left out & went into renal failure - total nightmare! (Made it through though & coming home tomorrow!) But fucking miserable - I'm certainly with you there!

  • @marin79: If only PA were the only state in the union, possibly joined by TX and OH, Hillary would have this wrapped up. Our democratic lives only hinge on PA, OH, and FL if we pick a candidate who does not broaden the map.

@marin79: Oh no! I hope she feels better--I'm sure she'll be happy to be at home!

  • don't forget ladies, if you don't like obama, you're a racist!

  • @marin79: Oh noes! I'm so sorry! Really glad that she's going to be okay, though.

(um...don't have all the info here, but I hope you smacked your sister around a little. Advil is pure poison for furry friends. Also chocolate, which tends to get left out even more often.)

@battleaxonista: I'm not arguing that other states don't matter - I'd be thrilled if Obama could pick up a state like VA where I grew up. Just saying that there are strategic states that the Dems need to win to take the election in Nov & Obama hasn't carried most of them. Even if the delegates she picked up in PA are erased, that doesn't mean that her PA win is erased. Regardless though, I hope like hell that he can carry the big states if he's the nominee. I, like most HRC supporters, want a Dem in office. Period.

  • i took my pet to the vet last weekend and found out she had gingivitis. now i have to brush her teeth. wtf?

  • @marin79: Just because Hillary won a state doesn't mean Obama is incapable. In that case we could sit around worrying frantically about NY, NJ and CA and I think we all know that's a little silly. If she blew his ass out by 20+pts like he does, then we could worry. Losing by 5-10 pts is really not that much...well I think he will have no trouble being just as competitive as she is.

@hortense: @BeckySharper: Thanks! It's really been awful - her kidneys were basically giving up at the end of last week, but then just like that, my girl fought like hell & made it! And thank goodness, since I would have lost it if she hadn't! (Not that it's about me, but I would have been just heartbroken).

And my sister felt like hell over the whole thing. My mom said she looked like she was going to throw up when we kept getting bad test results. But since it was her mistake & she's a poor med school student (graduates in a month!), my parents are covering part of the bill. And it's a big one - my girl's been in the hospital for over a week & the bill is going to be $5K! Such a mess!

  • Chuck Todd (numbers dude on MSNBC) looks like he could be Ricky Gervias's brother.

Anyways, Im quite proud of you NC. Well done.

  • @battleaxonista: Where do you live?

  • @marin79: Aw, that's great to hear. All the best to your furbaby. :)

  • @land surveyor k: I didn't vote for Hillary. Does that make me a misogynist? My vagina and I would like to know....

  • Image of funnyface funnyface at 08:50 PM on 05/06/08 *

@marin79: Oh no! I'm glad your baby pup is OK! I'll be extra good to my girl tonight in honor of yours.

@battleaxonista: There's a huge difference btwn states like CA & NY that always go Dem & swing states like OH & PA. I'm not arguing that Obama can't win those states - I hope he would - but so far he hasn't done well with core constituent of those states & that's what worries me. He needs to start speaking to them since his general message hasn't translated. Otherwise, I do think we're at risk of losing a good part of those votes to McCain.

  • @BeckySharper: Ditto.

  • @battleaxonista: I really don't get this argument that Obama is going to broaden the map. VA is on the cusp of going Blue and I could see Barry having a better chance there, but I can't see any candidate re-writing the electoral map by more than a state in any direction. There are a whole lot of states that just aren't going to switch sides- a Dem will win CA, NY, MA, etc. a Repub will win TX, the great plains and the deep south. Its going to come down to a handful of swing state, at least for this election. The fact that McCain wins FL and PA when they poll for a McCain-Obama election does concern me.

  • @myrtlebeachbum: I don't like givin' out teh personal info on the internets, sorry:P But I am from a state bordering Arkansas, promise. And we were all like 'where the hell is these people from' when Bubba started talking after a Hillary intro.

  • My question is: IF Obama gets the nom, will he ask Hillary to be his VP?

    Can it happen?

Because I love him, and I want it to.

  • Image of PICKLES PICKLES at 08:55 PM on 05/06/08 *

@BeckySharper: Isn't it amazing how much your vagina needs to know...mine is just really inquisitive and so darn cute.

  • @PICKLES IN MY TUNA: Vagina's yearn to be educated, and I think it's about damn time they were. Hehe.

  • @land surveyor k: What if you're black and don't like Obama. I've heard rumors that such people actually exist.

  • Image of marin79 marin79 at 08:58 PM on 05/06/08 *

@ElleL: I would have said yes 2 months ago, but not going to happen anymore. Sucks too since they appeal to totally different groups - they'd be a perfect hybrid! (In my mind anyway!)

  • @clevernamehere: If you write them off immediately, yes. That's Hillary's strategy, 50+1% where she relies on a few battleground states that either democrat will have trouble with. Do you think her 'gramps taught me how to shoot guns and take whiskey shots' is going to appeal to the white blue collar workers over McWarHero? We can't out-republican McCain even though that's what she's trying to do to carve that demographic away from Obama.

What she should be doing is what Edwards and now Obama are doing, pointing out how the Republican economic policies are fucking everyone over. Our candidates are never going to be the ones Regan Democrats want to hang out with over McCain, but we can show them that our policies will make their lives, and pocketbooks, better.

And of course Obama's numbers against McCain are weird because he's busy having the Clinton-McCain double team on almost every damn issue. He can't spend time going over McCain's numerous 'senior moments' that would blow up in his face otherwise because he has to deal with Hillary asserting he's some cult-leading elitist hypocrite. GE polls this early are useless.

  • @ElleL: I think they dislike each other too much for that to happen. I'm hoping for Obama/Edwards

  • @marin79: I'm reaaallly hoping it can. I think it's just about the only thing that can unite the party at this rate. But I guess we shall see.

  • @tranquilmademoiselle: That was my original dream ticket, so I wouldnt be upset by that at all.

But I have warmed to HIllary lately, and would like to see her in the White House as well.

  • @battleaxonista: Don't send me to the map, now.

I will listen to fellow flyover peeps on this issue (SC counts), although I disagree that Obama can win over the frighteningly small number of people who really decide our elections anymore. I just don't want to hear swing voter analysis out of no New York CITY unless it comes from my HRC girls.

    Carry on.

  • @ElleL: Sadly it won't. Even Pelosi is out hosing that idea down before it takes off. It makes sense. She's basically said he's unqualified to even run, and he's said she's exactly what's wrong with Washington, they bring out each other's worst attributes.

  • Image of kookla kookla at 09:01 PM on 05/06/08 *

@Jezebabe: It's bad enough when you have to brush your own.

And yes, that is the extent of my political prowess. I'll just live vicariously through all the smart people on this thread.

  • CNN just called North Carolina for Obama. Must be a convincing win for it to be called this early. They called it the second the polls closed. MSNBC called it, too.

Hillary Clinton told us North Carolina would be a "game changer." Wrong. It's still too early to call. ABC is calling her loss in NC a "rout." And the pundits, on MSNBC at least, are saying that Hillary didn't get what she needed tonight (so far) to convince anyone that Obama should be overthrown.

    It's over.

Chuck Todd: If Obama wins 57% in NC he will wipe out Hillary's gains in PA in delegates and in overall vote.

Keith Olbermann: Hillary's "game changer" didn't happen.

  • Image of marin79 marin79 at 09:02 PM on 05/06/08 *

At a news conference in Raleigh, David Axelrod, Mr. Obama's chief strategist, said that while he had not crunched all the numbers yet, he was not worried about the "Joe six-pack" vote.

Pls tell me that's now how they're referring to the working class. I don't want to go through that elitist bullshit again. And "Joe six-pack" sounds seriously condescending!

  • Image of Sophie Sophie at 09:02 PM on 05/06/08 *

I am a huge Obama supporter, but not fanatic. Hilary is a good candidate and talented and--oh what do I care? Go Obama!

Hilary doesn't have the delegate and won't have the delegate unless Jesus himself appears at the podium. No insults at Hilary the person, but her whole suspend gas tax and 'experts are for suckas really rubbed me in the wrong way.
Much love to Hilary but Obama, go get 'em.

  • Oh yeah somewhere a very shapely(FAT) woman is singing. Can you guys hear it? Totally not going to happen Hillary. Barack wins in every aspect across the board.

    And I know its close....

A WIN IS A WIN IS A WIN!

  • @PICKLES IN MY TUNA: Mine's cute too, but I hate it when people think it gets by entirely on looks.

  • @myrtlebeachbum: Ahh, but that's where I disagree. Because that legion of impressionable young individuals that's giving the Clinton's fits will be even more fired up to go after McCain in Nov. Because, he's an actual Republican and Vaginas for Obama will no longer have to feel like criminals for Baracking the vote. He's caught the interest of an entire YOUNG generation of voters. Who might possibly vote democrat the rest of their lives if he wins the nom. That's a powerful thing.

  • @battleaxonista: If I were a blue-collar worker, I'd be so fucking insulted with Hillary taking whiskey shots and Obama bowling to try and win me over. I would shake them and say, "I KNOW you're not 'just like me.' Stop trying so fucking hard."

  • Clinton's lead is down to 6 in Indiana. I do think I see the clouds parting and a celestial choir of fat ladies singing arias...awesome!

  • Disclaimer: I am a Hillary fan so let's get that out of the way. My problem with Obama as the eventual Democratic nominee is that people forget that the coalition he has built is NOT sufficient (as it currently stands) for him to win the general election in November. His failure to appeal to large sectors of the white populace is something that he will have to work extremely hard at between now and then because otherwise it doesn't matter how much blacks, college students, & wealthier whites love him. His coalition is enough to win a primary election but in many key states it will not be enough come November. Take, for example, North Carolina. Almost half of Hillary's supporters would not vote for Obama. If he doesn't find a way to appeal to swing white voters his coalition will not be enough to take this state in November.

  • @battleaxonista: You've totally lost me. I wasn't getting all pro-Hillary on you, I was actually asking which states you see Obama re-writing the map on because honestly, I don't see it happening.

  • Image of marin79 marin79 at 09:05 PM on 05/06/08 *

@battleaxonista: Oh pls - Hillary is right in there with Obama & Edwards loudly pointing out the failed Republican economic plans. How do you justify only recognizing Obama for doing just that?!

  • @battleaxonista: Well said. I think the young people can really overturn the old schoolers this time around, and for once they have a candidate they can truly get behind and feel passionate about.

As much as I loved Kerry in '04, he didnt inspire the College folk.

  • @battleaxonista: Que Etta James: "At Lassssst... my looooove has come alongggg....."

  • Image of PinkSoxHat PinkSoxHat at 09:06 PM on 05/06/08 *

@misssgolightly: Sadly there are people who actually care about that crap. How many times during 2000 and 2004 did you hear people say "Well, Bush is just someone I'd like to have a beer with." I don't want to have a beer with my president, I want to be able to afford my health insurance.

  • @marin79: Ding ding ding.

Remember Kerry? He didn't even call peeps "Joe Six Pack," and Joe Six Pack still said, "Fuck you, son."

    Nice work, Barry and Co.

  • Image of Sophie Sophie at 09:07 PM on 05/06/08 *

@HalfBloodPrince: Is there another election after this? Hasn't Guam and Virgin Islands already voted? Hilary will bow out, right or is there another state that looms...the Iraquis haven't had their say yet...
