Meet Amanda Brooks. She was raised in Texas, went to college and graduated with a double degree in photography and English. She entered the workforce, found a job she really enjoyed and then retired... At the age of 29. Her chosen profession? Internet call girl. And like any retired person with valuable advice, Ms. Brooks has written a couple of books: The Internet Escort's Handbook, volumes 1 and 2. The first book deals with "basic mental, emotional and physical considerations in escort work." The second is about advertising and marketing. A little digging revealed that the book has chapters titled "Are You A People Person? How Can You Become One?" and, under "Your Personal Appearance" are sections named "Breasts," "Weight And Proportions," "Hair," "Stretch Marks," "Teeth and Breath," "The Period Question," and, of course, "Ejaculation (Face or Specific Body Part)." Very thorough. Oh! And — here's the difference between an escort and a cheap hooker, in case you were wondering:
If you are selling your time, undivided attention, and the (unspoken) offer of sexual entertainment, you're an escort. If you're selling a specific sexual activity for a certain amount of money, you're a prostitute. If you won't have sex with the man you're dating unless he buys you an expensive dinner, you're a (relatively cheap) prostitute.It's not clear why Ms. Brooks appears to be wearing a wig in some of her photos, but her site claims, "Amanda's family is not embarrassed by her or her mission." And although she's retired, it sounds like she really enjoyed letting old dudes grope her for money! "How did I feel working as an escort?" she asks. "Happy, satisfied, in control of my life; wealthy, healthy, at peace with myself, free, successful and I slept like a baby every night."

Come on now, a wealthy sex worker who sleeps like a baby "every night"? What, did she specialize in afternoon delights?
"Happy, satisfied, in control of my life; wealthy, healthy, at peace with myself, free, successful and I slept like a baby every night."
Methinks the lady doth protest too much.
Well, if she's happy, I'm happy. It's Friday, goddamnit.
I say, good for her.
"Amanda's family is not embarrassed by her or her mission"
her mission? Is she trying to convert people as well?
I'm kind of intrigued by the section on teeth and breath.
@Philthyist is annoyed: ....but would she want her daughter in the same line of work?
Well that have always been and will always be prostitutes and it sounds like she worked it pretty well. Good for her I guess.
She has the same degree I have. Is this a sign?
there have not that
@TheGuvnah: Yeah, and stretch marks. Are they encouraged? Discouraged? Concealed in some way? Does anyone really care if their internet hooker has stretch marks?
what does it mean to be an internet call girl? no street walking? no pimp? just Craigslists ads?
This is a silly question, but after you go out with a guy and he buys you an expensive dinner do you ever feel like, yeah, maybe you should at LEAST give him a blowjob?
I showed a friend my first stretch marks and he said: worse things have happened to uglier people.
I kinda want to read this now... I'm betting Borders doesn't carry it though.
Her chapter headings make her sound like the Emily Post of escorts. I want to read about how to become a people person. Because I'm a dog person.
"The period question" and it's following chapter "properly thanking god that your not pregnant"
@honeybunchesofoats: I'm guessing just Craigslist. I guess that's part of the being your own boss thing?
I, too was able to retire from "real jobs" before 30, but were I to write a book there certainly wouldn't be chapters with titles anywhere near those... But hey, kudos to her. Get in where you fit in...
So...I want to see her bank account. Because I don't believe that she's "retired' after just a few years of escorting. And her book deal couldn't have been worth that much.
So, what is an internet hooker, anyways? Is it different from real life escorting?
If she's happy, I guess that's okay, but ugh...there are better, more legit, ways to make a living out there.
@AthertonMerriweather: No. But I think a lot of guys feel that way.
@garrison-tequillor: I got my first stretch marks when I was about 10, and now I'm imagining if I had kept track of which ones were the first ones. "Look, see this line on my inner thigh? That was my very first stretch mark!"
I must add this to my summer reading list immediately!
I wonder if my sister in law would be amused if I told her she was a relatively cheap prostitute.
I don't really agree with her definitions. But....whatever. Whatever floats her boat.
While i am a fan of her writing these books in general (english degree's a good sign) and of her owning her shit unapologetically, what's with the hierarchy-of-sex-workers showing through in that quoted paragraph? i may be reading into it incorrectly, but come on amanda, show a little solidarity.
@AthertonMerriweather: WHORE!
@AthertonMerriweather: No.
@KittenFluff: Yeah, so does that make them low-class johns then?
@BadenBaden, who was attempting to phase out her name but ha...: i read an interview with her in the village voice online (the sun is thankfully (?) blocked at work) and she retired because she met a man who by her own definition can support her while she writes these books. so yeah, she 'boyfriended' well, if that's even a term.
@Archetype: I WAS JOKING!
@THE hoi polloi: Retired before 30?!?!?! Please do write a book about your secret. As long as it is not "The Secret."
Are you "from" money? I don't get it otherwise. (Not hating, just jealous)
Honestly, I could see myself doing this. But it takes too much time. It's the same reason I've never started a blog.
I'd rather spend my time watching my Friends DVDs.
That has got to be a self-published imprint, right? The cover is straight up 80s clip art!
@THE hoi polloi: Retired by 30? Tell me how.
This is just silly. Who aspires to be a call girl? Are people actually clamoring to read this book? I call bullshit. And what, exactly, can this woman tell me about breasts that I don't already know?
@AthertonMerriweather: :-) Me too.
I was kind of teasing about the fact that prostitute seems to be synonymous with whore on this site.
@AthertonMerriweather: Personally, NO. With me it is all about sexual chemistry. "Owing" a man sexual services for any reason....um No, Never.
@rednrowdy: oh, interesting! So she's not retired, she's just a kept woman. I'm gonna go look up that article. Thanks!
@AthertonMerriweather: phew. I was seriously worried for a sec!
Way to call it "retired" when you really mean "became a trophy wife/girlfriend."
@AthertonMerriweather: Fuck no. I have gone out to really nice dinners and not even thought someone deserved making out.
FINALLY, a book worth reading!
I love the idea that there are different categories of prostitutes, like there are men who are out there bargain hunting, while others care about the "label" of the woman. It's like prostitution is divided into Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic
@BadenBaden, who was attempting to phase out her name but ha...: Yeah, because being "kept" sure is empowering!
@TheGuvnah: by her definitions i believe it makes her a HIGH CLASS prostitute. the cheap ones settle for expensive dinner.
@rednrowdy: yeah. and his car corners like it's on rails.
That distinction between escort and prostitute is just mean. C'mon lady, why be so judgmental?
@TheGuvnah: I think this girl's ignorant to the fact that if a man is a john if he buys a woman dinner. I don't think most men view themselves in that way.
College Callgirl needs to weigh in on this.
I look at folks like this and wonder 2 things:
1. Is is just about money being more important than sex
or
2. Do certain women need to just announce to the world that they are doing this as kind of way of saying "Yeah, men PAY to f*&^ ME!"
?
@honeybunchesofoats: i hope you mean "love" in the sense of "hate."
@andj: sadly, being nice and slutty doesn't equal having an enlightened class consciousness. or maybe it's a market-share thing, like she feels threatened by women who will give it up on the cheap and therefore needs to lower the appeal of the discount-priced sex workers to keep her share of the market. You'll have to excuse me, I've been watching the first season of the Wire again.
