Fashion editors do good! The minimum age for runway modeling at Australian fashion week has been raised to 16-years old for both males and females. The setting of a minimum age developed after editors at Australian Vogue and Marie Claire threatened to pull coverage of the event after the organizers of the fashion week had decided to make 14-year-old Monika Jagaciak its star. The 16-year-old age limit is not new to fashion weeks across the world: London, Sao Paolo, and Paris fashion weeks have similar restrictions. Now, if only they got more women of different ethnicities and body types walking the shows and in the magazines then we would be out of a job. [Reuters]

i know this is good news. but unless we are talking ANTM, I just dont care about runways right now.
every step makes a difference right? jesus, 14? when i was fourteen i was busy thinking about boys and hanging out with my friends. i couldn't even imagine the pressure that poor girl feels as a model.
But once they get over age 15, the ethnic girls start having curves. So if you want non-white models, you need to allow them to use children. [end sarcasm]
how is 16 better than 14? might as well make it 18, no?
Well, considering that even I was coltish (all knees and elbows) at 14, I can see why the fashion industry would want to use them. None of those horrible breasts or hips to disrupt the line.
/sarcasm, in case that's not clear...
@westvillagegirl: sarcasm, but sadly, it is most likely the truth!
@NotCoolEnough:
But at 18 they are old, withered hags!
*sarcasm as well.
@westvillagegirl:bithc if you didnt have hips at 14, i may have cause to hate you.
oookay srsly, i was all bony then too, but with really wide hips.
Big-boneded. I iz it.
@theloudcorral: Much ado about nothing. Kate Moss started out at 14 and she turned out just fine.
@theloudcorral: Yeah, I'm sure it is. Maybe sarcasm wasn't right word ... contempt, maybe?
@Philthyist took a Xanax and is still bitter today: But you are super tall, no? 36 inseam? You need those big bones to support all that height.
I'm like 5'6" (ok 5'5.5" but whose measuring?_
I completely agree with the age restrictions but I feel sorry for Monika. It'd be hard not to take it personally, I wonder how she handled the news.
14 is just too young, she's still a girl! but 16 is much better - still a girl, but almost legal, so best of both worlds.
what a ridiculous industry
@westvillagegirl: Thank you for your kind words, tall yes. the Big Bones are extra- I am like Big Betty Birther with my hips and shoulders.
I guess the good news is I may not get osteoporosis as severely as some others. (more bone to eat through, suchas.)
Why not dress up infants in designer frocks and have them crawl down the runway? Or is 8 lbs 6 oz. too fat for fashion?
@SouthernComfort: I think your definition of fine is different than mine...
@krazykarot: I don't. Maybe she can spend the next two years where she oughta be: SCHOOL.
@scrumtrulescent: LOL! Comment of the day!
Preemies ONLY! Full term is for FATTIES!
@Philthyist took a Xanax and is still bitter today: And it must be nice to get an advance look at every guy's developing bald spot.
@cate3710: Le joke.
@SouthernComfort: Whew. I was worried.
@westvillagegirl: One more thing for the anti-choicies to get their panties in a wad about.... If abortion is legal, who on Earth will model the Marc Jacobs spring line?
@westvillagegirl: I always forget people do not see everything from my angle..
@Philthyist took a Xanax and is still bitter today: Nope. All I ever get to see is nostril hair. : (
@scrumtrulescent: I'm pretty sure that's the same measurements as most of the "plus sized" models on ANTM. Tyra likes to promote positive body image.
I googled her and saw a picture of her looking sweet and than I scrolled down to notice that she had a dress with a plunging neckline. That shit is not okay.
A) She's fourteen
B) It is sexualizing little girls (because she looks sweet and young).
C) It is wacking out womanhood as some hybrid between sexy/childlike/innocent.
When are we going to say fuck you to the fashion industry?
yes! I am so glad! Its about time more places start doing this. It sad when in modeling 22 is old super old. I would be fine with the modeling industry upping it to 17 or 18.
Nothing to do with the article per se, but why do the English speaking media always spell São Paulo wrong? If it's so much trouble, why not just use what should be the anglicised version of its name, Saint Paul? Does it always have to be this weird mix of Portuguese and Italian?
http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/294/noir1mm6si7.jpg I had no idea who Monika Jagaciak was, so I did a Google image search and this very adult looking woman holding a cigarette popped up. Cripes!!
14 year olds can't even afford that kind of clothing. I feel like the older women who can actually buy from those labels aren't going to be pulled in by an ad featuring a 14 year old.
