Kelly Cutrone is the owner of fashion PR company People's Revolution, where Whitney from The Hills is now working. This weekend, MTV ran a documentary about Fashion Week following Kelly and her assistant Stefanie as they prepared for the fall shows, and we got a glimpse at how super awesome she is. First of all, our hats are off to anyone who successfully works in fashion, yet cares more about the work than the fashion. Kelly's style is akin to the "blogger's look": No bra, no makeup, baggy shirts, tired face, and hair so dirty it looks wet. She seems like a tough boss, but appreciative just the same. Clip above.

Man, being a PA sucks ass. I'm an exec assistant, but I could never do the PA thing. People would die, for reals.
OMG the Fashionista.com bit was worth it.
My attempts at working in PR lasted about a few weeks. At least I was in London, and it was an internship. I could NOT last in the industry.
Loving all those Apples, though.
Yes! I saw most of this episode this weekend and when I saw her come on screen I screamed to my boyfriend "oh awesome, we get to see what's in store for Whitney with her new boss!!" Of course his response was along the lines of "I don't know why you'd think I would care about that."
I did find her to be much less bitchy than I expected but totally weird. Can't wait to see Whitney interacting with her tonight...sadly that and washing my hair are all I have to look forward to for tonight.
@Hamsterpants: I've loved every executive assistant I've met. They are the hardest working people in any company. Period.
@Archetype: Awww, thanks!
From what I hear, she's a genuine lunatic, and while I appreciate anyone working in fashion looking as unkempt as she does, this is one lady you don't want to be working for.
@Hamsterpants: The only way I could be a PR PA would be if I could be Bubbles from Ab Fab. I could handle that (although I'd rather be Patsy, and in reality, I think I'm Edwina).
I can't watch the video, but may I say, that is the face of a hard working woman. It is also the face of Gretchen, my high school Woman's History teacher who told me I had to "get my ass in gear".
@CaptainHangNail: Yeah, and I am baffled as to what could be wrong with those hard boiled egg whites. I mean.....you can't really mess that up, right?
I try to rock the super dirty hair look, but my boss is not such a fan. Oh, to be the boss instead of the receptionist and make my own goddamn rules!
@NoInheritance: Also, Cutrone scares me. I am also a big pansy.
@Hamsterpants: @Archetype: I consider exec assistants to be on the same level as court clerks - your best allies in navigating the system and a really great source of gossip and interesting info. If you treat the clerks courteously, and with respect for the fact that they know a whole lot about the court system (and that they run the system), and they will treat you well in turn. Brush them aside, or ignore them because they're "below you," and well, good luck to you.
I guess they edited all the parts out where she was being nice.
@petuniacat: Oh hell, I know my place with our CEO's assistant. She's incredibly bright, incredibly hardworking, and I place myself way below her on the hierarchy. Thankfully, she really likes me.
@hatepaperdoll: Oh Bubbles. She was the bomb.
I worked for A Famous Producer's production company, and the chick who was his PA made seriously good money - but guess what? Absolutely NO life of her own. She literally had to be available 24/7/365, like a fireman or an ER doctor. I just don't possess the gene that even allows me to see how a movie producer needs someone on call around the clock. I mean, it's okay, your coke dealer will still be there tomorrow.
She's completely hungover in the first clip, which I love almost as much as the fact that she is dismissing well-heeled wannabies to the back rows of her show while wearing a tshirt and no makeup.
I marvel at the assistant's ability to keep on making different preparations of eggs (with no sighs of exasperation), while it seems patently obvious that the BossLady just does not like eggs (despite asking for them over and over.)
@Archetype: Without a doubt, EA's are a gate-keeper position behind the scenes and NOT to be taken for granted!!
@petuniacat: If the Executive Assistant is say, assistant to the CEO, then it doesn't matter if you're the most senior SVP, they've got the boss's ear so they might as well be your boss as a result. Never, ever piss them off. Also, they can get a reservation at any restaurant in town with no advance notice, it's kind of amazing to see.
@babytuna: Exactly. If that was me she'd be wearing the damn eggs. There are limits.
@Hamsterpants: Our main office has an EA, and she is FABULOUS. Anytime she helps me out I get all gushy with gratitude, because I know she's doing a million things at once.
I first came across Kelly Cutrone a few years ago on a Style Network special on Fashion Week. She's a ballbuster, but not in the same way that woman from that Fashionista Diaries is--she's very focused on her clients, making sure she's doing everything she can to make sure they're getting press coverage, etc. Impressive, but I'd probably want to kill myself if she was my boss.
Despite the seeming fakeness of her hug with Whitney, she did hug her PA after one of the shows was over. Also, the Sass & Bide show on True Life appeared to be the one on the Hills.
I love when my faux-reality tv collides.
@Hamsterpants: I know a girl who is the personal assistant to a very famous (and very nice!) comedic actor. She makes BUCKETS of money, is very close with her boss and his family, and gets to travel all over to film with him. And I never been jealous of her. Not for a minute. Some people have the personality for it. If I wasn't at home for 11 1/2 months out of the year, I would lose my fricking mind.
Okay, this is a really generous profile of kelly cutrone. From everything I've read and seen about her, she comes off as excessively abrasive and rude. She's actually completely banned people from her shows over very petty things.
Is it just me, or does "People's Revolution" sound like a douchey overpriced jeans company?
as much as i read fashionista.com, that one line made me laugh so hard. seriously. that word is disgustingly overused, and this is coming from a fashion writer.
It looks like she's just had a tossing accident with some pizza dough.
i respect ppl who work in PR for the very reason shown above. with that being said, i would not survive a day in Whitney's shoes.
btw is Cutrone wearing one of those Prada turban that was suppose to be "fashionable"? or she's just merely wearing a towel on her head to stop the dirty/wet hair from migrating to her face?
I cried when the PA couldn't meet up with her mom who had flown in from chicago for her daughter's birthday, so I'm sure I couldn't handle being in the presence of the great cutrone herself.
@Jezebabe...is a stern and angry midget!!!!: Yeah, but the fashion industry -- especially where it overlaps with publicity -- is a very petty thing as well. That's not to comment on how much work designers put into their clothing (I know it's more than we could ever imagine), but Fashoin Week and the shows that go on there, for everyone including the designers, is a see-and-be-seen event. It's all about where you're sitting, who's seeing who, who's not seeing who, etc. Kelly Cutrone seems to not just understand that abrasive pettiness, but to actually personify it.... which makes me love her. I would totally try to be her PA. I think I could survive. I don't know if I could excel.
@bjchilipepper: I think it's the latter.... :)
Please don't throw knives--or anything else--at me, but Kelly was one of the only PR women who never bullshitted me, tried to flatter me, or threatened me. Her whole approach was: "Here's what I've got. Want it? No? Okay, whatever, kid."
She was fresh air to me. But was that poor girl actually cooking egg whites for her? Geez, order in, Kelly.
I was a PA in PR, and it was a nightmare. Main problem was my boss THOUGHT she was a celebrity in the fashion industry. I pulled more strings for that bitch using the name of my previous employer than she deserved. But, I'm not bitter. I've moved on. Just, like, NO one ever take a job in that industry. EVAR. Trust.
But, for real? Kelly is kind of a blessing, because at least she's honest. No beating around the bush. No passive aggression. She tells you what's up. You're either down or your not, and that can go a LOOOONG way. And, she's pretty funny.
My main criticism out there, however, for those who are owning/operating PR firms is HIRE MORE THAN ONE OFFICE MANAGER! Maybe hire a couple temps or high school grads to do nothing but keep the office tidy, stocked, and operating smoothly. It would go a long way. You'd get so much more out of your employees that it'd be completely worth the expense, AND you'd probably get more sleep and time for yourself (because most of YOU do work obsessively and tirelessly). "Boutique" firms (eyes roll; I lost 5 pounds), I'm talking about you too! I know this is what you bitches usually use your interns for, which is completely insulting to them and still a waste of (hopefully) decently educated (trust-fund having) work, but get someone who isn't ambitious and who is wiling to work for a lower wage (but a legal one, and for no more than 40 hours, for fuck's sake).
And, I'm. DONE.
I'm sorry for the poor writing in my previous comment.
I had to type that up pretty quickly.
I'm stoned and in a hurry.
Think about that.
I have had personal run-ins with Ms. Cutrone and she's a psycho bitch. Move out of her way if you see her coming at ya.
self-serving comment but what was the name of this show so that I can set my dvr to tape a future airing? I am so bummed I missed this.
lol at the seating chart scene. and her being hungover.
@Ian Spiegelman: *KNIFE THROW* Just kidding!
Yeah, when I saw the title I was expecting a Devil wearing Prada. She seemed pretty non bullshit-ish though. And I kind of love that she looks hungover and unshowered. I always thought people in the fashion industry were all Anna Wintour, all the time. Shows how much I know.
She looks like Donna Karen's yoga guru with that white towel do''
@Hamsterpants: I admire you (and most anyone, for that matter) for being an executive assistant. They are definitely the unsung heroes. I was one once upon a time, but lost the subservient gene that's needed, especially when dealing with personal demands from a boss's spouse not to mention the fact that the number of gray hairs I was getting quickly outnumbered my monthly salary.
omg i am lurving all the EA love on this thread. I am a tired EA and too many people missed the memo today about *not* pissing me off. I am pissed, but i am not cooking eggs. Sometimes the grass is greener and sometimes you're refilling the grass prescription. God bless california.
Does anyone know the name of this documentary? Now I want to try to record a rerun of it. Fanks!
Kelly fucking rocks and is a legend.
@misssgolightly: Kelly's more the down to earth cursing city chick you knew in Junior year who hated everyone but for some reason liked you. Or, if you knew her in high school, she was the cool new wave girl smoking under the basketball net. But she never lost that quality. As much as she's a fashion publicist, I do believe she couldn't give a shit for anything in the fashion world except how the clothes look. The video is totally her. Giving a fuck while not giving in.
oh please please let this woman single-handedly spur a "hills" spinoff. forget whitney! i want turban-wearing egg-hater! hyphens!
Would never. What struck me when watching that show was that if Cutrone was a human being, she would have let that girl have dinner with her mother on her birthday instead of making her cook eggs. The poor girl is a slave - it's not like Cuntrone doesn't have 50 other egg-cookers to do the job and for gods' sakes, if she can have a fashion show, she can figure out how to feed herself.
Ugh. I don't know Kelly Cutrone personally so I can't judge but I did work in the fashion industry for almost a year at Showroom Seven. In general most of the people in charge were terrible, this egg white scene is the tip of the iceberg. I can't even begin to go over this in my mind, I might need to break out my old Prozac prescription.
@catsontoast: it's an episode of True Life on MTV. usually they put their series online right after they air, but this one isn't on the website for some reason. that's how i watch the hills. i'd like to see this one, so i hope they put it up eventually.
@misssgolightly: @Ian Spiegelman: Yeah, I could only work for her if she liked me. If she did, I would probably have a blast. For a year or so, that is. I don't have the PR personality.
I would eat all of her unwanted egg whites though. Those are my obsession.
Here, here to all things said about the PR industry. I worked at a mid-sized firm and was put on accounts that ranged from a restaurant group, to a major financial group, to an outsourcing company in India. And that's only three of my, oh, seven accounts at the time. One second I was pitching financial analysts on the Google IPO and the next second I was pushing wine. I worked for absolute nut jobs, and I was at my desk for 11 hours straight. I was paid $30,000 and was highly discouraged from taking time off to go to my brother's wedding.
Then I went in-house at a nonprofit. Oh, current job, how I love thee. Let me count the ways...
seriously folks...this woman is a shrew in a paper thin world of relevance. And there are masochistic youngsters that think that they are doing something with their lives--dont encourage them.
