R.E.M. were on The Colbert Report last night to promote their new album Accelerate, and Colbert had some career advice for Stipe, saying that the band's music was "a little too political... people want to hear songs about girls!" To which Stipe responded, "Yeah, I'm not good with the girl songs." Teh gayz r funny!

Fuck you Time Warner for taking away my free Comedy Central.
Never liked him.
Oh Stephen, you're so dreamy!
...and tonight's guest - Melissa Etheridge!
And what of "Crush With Eyeliner", then?
ineffable, was that about Courtney or no? I can't remember. She's a sad tomato, and all.
@hortense: Natalie Merchant
Oh, Michael Stipe. Love him and R.E.M. Saw them live when I was 17 (yikes, 13 years ago). Back then, it still seemed debatable that he wasn't good with the girl songs.
I look at Stipe and I feel old because the first time I saw him live he had a full head of wavy hair and was totally dreamy..*sigh*
I loathe REM but Michael Stipe came across as tolerable. I love how Stephen was high above them.
WAIT. Michael Stipe is gay?
@moonagirl: Really? For some reason I thought it was about Courtney. Or did Courtney just think it was about Courtney?
I don't remember the only REM concert I went to. I was making out with my best friend and two guys we met there the whole time... 1995?!?!?! I am also so clueless that I didn't know he was teh gay! For reelz?
I'm just glad Stipe looks better. He looked really sickly for a while.
When Colbert sings I immediately think of that hilarious SWC episode when he dreams of becoming a rocker and sings, "Carry on My Wayward Son." Priceless.
Someone told me that this new album was extremely terrible.
omg wait, what happened to Colbert's pants? LOL
@ejjakid6: ahahah i hate you!
The one time I've seen REM in concert it was completely ruined for me by the asshole sitting next to me who midway through the show realized Stipe is gay and proceeded to make obscene derogatory comments for the duration. That is, when he wasn't shouting "play something old" during Radio Free Europe.
Why is his stool so TALL? It makes me giggle.
@braak: It's getting better reviews than their last few. And that makes me very happy. I can't wait to download it. I hear it's kind of like New Adventures in Hi-Fi, which is AWESOME because that cd is phenomenal and totally underrated.
I don't know Michael, "She Just Wants to Be" pretty much hit the nail on the head for me. I relate to that song waaaay too much.
Love, love, love REM. But then again Athens, GA is where my fam's from. Going to Wuxler records for the first time (where Michael met Peter) was like a religious experience. And don't get me started on Weever D's BBQ.
It's really hard for me to watch the Colbert Report because I just hear Phil Ken Sebben and it confuses mah brainz.
@BAngieB: I know! I didn't know he was gay, I thought he refused to confirm either way to kind of silence the debate (or try to). I liked his interview on NPR last week too.
@whatdoyouthinkofthepie: @luckymolly: @GirlLegal29: When I saw them in concert it rained during "It's the End of the World As We Know", which was the encore. It was kind of perfect.
@MsDirector: That is the most underrated album ever. Such a beautiful record.
@BAngieB: yeppers!!!!!!
@hortense: I'm pretty sure. Of course, I'm going back to when I was 18...it's all kind of fuzzy then!
@TwiceShy: It looks uncomfortable. He may need some stool softener.
@TwiceShy: They've been doing a Jon Stewart is short gag for a while now, maybe its related to that?
I always wonder if Colbert is going to get some kind of Stockholm syndrome. You know, make a face long enough and it gets stuck? What if he gets stuck in character?
@hortense: it's totally about courtney.
@hortense: I thought it was about Courtney too...
@MsDirector: Uhh. I totally bought it the day it came out. It's pretty good. It's so much better than the last one though, that it's hard for me to adequately judge. There's definitely a New Adventures vibe to it, but I wouldn't yet put it on that level. 'Cause that CD rulez. And yes, is totally underrated.
I stumbled across this last night and kind of got the impression that Colbert is a fan. He broke character and giggled and didn't give them nearly as much gay/liberal grief as I expected. Or maybe I was projecting.
I saw this last night. It made me laugh out loud more than once (although it didn't hurt I had a bottle and a half of almond sparkling wine, you know, because I'm classy like that).
@brookidy: That might be too "tough on the stump."
@hfree: Not to quibble, but it's Wuxtry. Their demos were called The Wuxtry Tapes. I used to hang out at the one by Emory and was buddies with the owner and the main guy there. Ah, memories.
And I love R.E.M. Always have, always will. And I never thought Michael Stipe was anything BUT gay. I thought he was like Elton John and someone who came out way before I had any concept of gay or straight.
When I was 13, I had a massive crush on Mr. Stipe (6-ft tall poster of his face on my bedroom wall, the works). I guess it was the early-90s-indie-girl equivalent of my grandma having a crush on Liberace.
@moonagirl: If all the inane rumors and stories of my teenage years were true, Stipe would have been involved in a four-way love square involving Merchant, Morrissey, and Billy Bragg.
@nolongerinacubiclebutstillawhore!: WHAT is almond sparkling wine? Is it classy or trashy? More importantly, is it tasty?
As for Stipe, for some reason I was under the impression that he was bi. Also, I saw the B-52s on Jay Leno the other night and they are old and it made me sad. They looked kind of... frantic to make a comeback.
I'm watching this right this very minute on the rerun.... love the big stool... @TwiceShy: His stool is big cuz he's the importantest. Isn't that the going joke on the show....
Oh Captian Colbert come home with me.
This made me so happy last night. The best part was when Michael asked Stephen to cross his legs, and instead Stephen put their CD in front of his junk, saying now he had a codpiece.
Seriously....he's gay? This on the heels of finding out last year that George Michael is gay? It's too much.
@briardahl: I had a serious Billy Bragg crush!!!
@a.clever.otter is cheering for the Tar Heels: My dad's an Emory grad, so I too have hit up that store. And I used to go to UGA in my youth... and actually have walked past Mr. Stipe on the sidewalk in downtown Athens. Of course, every UGA student has a similar story- he lives there. :)
As for the gay... I was pretty sure he had declared "bi" back in the day. And that from my encounter, he may be funny, but fella needs a BATH. He is one "natural" smelling rock star.
@ejjakid6:
"Junkie Whore?" "Junkie Whore." "Junkie Whore!" -----> LOVE that entire episode but the Colbert sequence at the end made it.
@a.clever.otter is cheering for the Tar Heels: It's cool. Thanks for the correction. You're just lucky I like otters :).
@rocknrollunicorn: I picked it up Trader Joe's. It might be almond champagne, although I thought I read it as a sparkling wine. Whatevs, it's taaaasty and bubbly, and costs like 5.99, so I say classy :)
@briardahl: Wow, that sex tape would be all kinds of hot!
I think Michael Stipe used to be of the "I'm a sexual omnivore" type, but I never bought that. He totally didn't take me up on my screeched "I love you Michael"* offer when I saw them in concert, and who could resist that?
Gays, that's who.
(Dignity protector: Although I did see them in concert, I didn't actually do this)*
@ineffable.me: Not free since when on Time Warner??
Also: Meant for a girl or not, 'At My Most Beautiful' rips my heart strings out and does a dance on them every single time. Every. Single. Time.
