Warning: if you're a hairdresser (particularly a male hair dresser), working with hair dyes will increase your risk of developing bladder cancer. And those who use hair dye may be at risk for bladder cancer, too, as well as lymphoma and leukemia. (Also, the darker the dye, the riskier it is.) Which means that the Naomi Watts of the world might be safer than, well, Cameron Diaz that time Cameron Diaz went brunette. [Independent]

Now who's a "dumb" blonde, eh??
now i feel like a dare devil for all those brunette colourings to hide greys. im living on the edge baby!
Christ on a crutch, I'm screwed.
Won't somebody think of Mandy Moore??!
Ooh, ooh! Safer than Ashlee Simpson in her "I'm Not Jessica Here Is My Black Hair Let Me Show You It" phase.
Fuck.
i'm not going to stop dyeing my hair red, sorry
It's just been hair all day today!
yikes!
So blondes do have more fun...and happier bladders?
I thought "they" decided a while ago that hair dye is non-carcinogenic?
That's okay, my bladder's been making me look fat anyways.
@axel_f: *high fives you* same here.
I'm staying with the dark hair. My hair grows too fast and blonde dye won't stick (or will turn brassy ORANGE).
@ndngrl: Oooooooo girl, Pink in trouble too!
@LipstickLibrarian: Yeah I thought I heard that too. I am going with that. I will not be parted from my hair dye.
"But the panel found that the evidence was inadequate and concluded that personal use of hair dyes was "not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans"."
Everybody take a breath...they do this every couple of years, and there's yet to be a grand rash of hair dye related deaths.
Somewhere, Pete Wentz weeps.
@zivah: Paris Hilton?
CRAP. I have black-hole black hair and a birthmark the shape of Turkey (the country) on the back of my head. The hair grows white in a successful attempt to make it look like my boyfriend's jizz lands in the shapes of countries . WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NOW?
@NefariousNewt: Tara Reid?
But what about those who have to cover greys. It's either go grey or get cancer? Just fucking great.
@Jezebabe...is a stern and angry midget!!!!: no they have worse bladders when they dry to go darker.
I've been a natural light auburn redhead thanks to L'Oreal for years now! I cannot go back! I have no idea what color my hair really is at this point. Anybody else have no clue as to their natural hair color?
OMG CHEMICALS ARE HARMFUL YOU GUYS STOP THE PRESSES
Hmmm I guess gettin' my weave on was a safe bet all around. I shall pat myself on the back for that one.
@ItchykooParker: Um, the roots, or the whole of it?
@ItchykooParker: no clue.
I will regret saying this when it finally catches up to me, but EVERYTHING I do is bad for me. Manicures? Inhaling lots of dangerous chemicals. Hair dye? Giving me bladder cancer. Taking the T? Exposing me to lots of gross and stale air.
Can a girl live?!
Is it OK for me to have decided I no longer like scientists? I feel bad about this but I've been thinking about it for a while. I think science is the new religion and it scares me.
(South Park anyone? Oh...my...Science)
@nicebrownboy: Spray paint? RonCo spray on hair???
@DeathBySexy: Except it'll make your hair fall out. Aww, nothing fun is safe.
@leMaldeTete: Nicely done.
@Jezebabe...is a stern and angry midget!!!!: My bladder is extremely happy, but my life is boring as all hell. I'm not sure how much blonder I need to be before this "fun" you speak of begins.
@Rhody: Everything gives you cancer, including living. You better quit that.
This validates my decision to cove grey in my dirty blond hair with more blond instead of brown. Also, makes me worry since I'm only 21 and already covering grey. But what has my bladder done for me lately anyways?
You know fake tan will be next. One day I'll be forced to return to the mousey brown haired, so-white-I'm blue self. It'll be like highschool all over again.
@TurangaLeela: I like scientists. But I hate "scientists."
@DeathBySexy: Or indeed on the head should it get itchy.
Uh oh, my best friend (who happens to be a male hairdresser) just spent 6 hours turning my hair from black to red.
And I dye my hair monthly, have for years. Dark, dark shades. Like black. Meh.
Gonna dye dye die.
Sweet holy Jesus, whatever you do, do NOT DO NOT SHOW my GF this. She has been on my ass to leave my hair alone and I would never hear the end of this.
Yesss, now sales of my patented non-carcinogenic broccoli-formula hairdye are going to go through the roof. Of course, it's only available in green, but for the sake of our bladders...
@nicebrownboy: Best comment of the day thus far. And I feel your pain.
@LipstickLibrarian:
Yeah, I had read that "they" agreed the only carcinogenic dyes were the "progressive" ammonia salt based ones, like Grecian formula, and that the others were all safe.
Heck, if it is the pigment, I'm screwed, cause aside from using regular dye, I love me some color-depositing shampoos filled with brown pigments.
Ok How about some advice? I dye my daughter's bleached streak with Clairol mixing red. It comes out fire engine red but only lasts one week.
The brown parts go to maroon, which I like but she only tolerates. That part fades much slower.
@axel_f: HENNA! seriously if you use the high quality stuff it is just as bright and gorgeous as the chemicals. i have a link if you are interested.
my mom just tried to switch to vegetable based dye and the hairdresser was disgusted by its inferior quality.
@Skinny Bone Jones: ps hi star star, so many new stars today!
@ItchykooParker:
I know my natural color is a 4, that is all. What specific tone, no idea. I need to know that so that I can decide what strength peroxide to get when I dye my hair.
I started going gray at 13, and it is only on the back of my head, so going natural is not an option until the front of my head decides to catch up.
@arodriguez.romero: get some manic panic dahlin!
well I guess it makes sense because going blonde, you are taking something out of your hair, but going darker, you are putting something onto your hair. not quite natural.
@zivah: Ah. Important distinction, and I think you're right...
@J.D.Regent: I'm interested in your link.
@Rhody: +1!!!!! I'm pretty much screwed. At least I'll look pretty?
@J.D.Regent: I'm interested in your link, too, sucka! Hi, star-star.
@ineffable.me: tried it. Manic Panic is semi-permanent. It fades even faster. I tried heating it with the blow dryer, and I tried the tin foil. I must be doing something wrong but I don't know what. I use 20 developer.
@J.D.Regent: LUSH henna is great. Really fucking messy to use, but v good.
@arodriguez.romero: really? i had blue hair for the longest time and i used 2 brands either fudge or fx. they lasted for at least a month.
As a matter of fact I recently went crazy and dyed my hair red over my regular hair (my hair was a light brown) and it's definitely super bright. I've washed it twice and it's still workin ok.
I can't imagine what's going on in there.... :(
? can't see ?
[www.mehandi.com]
this is what i have used to great success. my shit was like flourescent, which I love, at first, and then mellowed to a gorgeous copper/auburn. the only thing is it does NOT COME OUT. it is so permanent, it is a stain. i had to get a haircut and go dark to cover it.
the important thing is the timing and that you use body art quality henna, not the bullshit they sell in the health food store. the website i posted has mad resources, a million different mixes and tons of photographs. i also like it bc it is kind of fun and craftsy and witchy to cook up a big brew of it, add in teas you like and lemon, essential oils, whatever strikes your fancy. have fun and feel cancer free.
@arodriguez.romero: The mixing red is mostly pigment, so it won't stick as well or as long unless it's mixed with another dye (I think...I'm guessing it's a color booster and that's generally the way those go).
Manic Panic is generally awful and only lasts a week, so go for Special Effects. It might be harder to find, but that shit is amazingly good and lasts, especially the Atomic Pink shade, which is basically permanent. When you apply it, wrap it in saran wrap and blow dry it for a bit and leave it on as long as possible.
It will fade, but it should last a fairly decent amount of time, definitely more than a week. Also, it's totally going to look like you've murdered someone when you wash it out and probably for a few days after. Bleeding into surrounding hair shouldn't be too much of a problem. If anything, it might give then non-bleached streak a bit of a red cast, but probably nothing significantly different than now.
@ineffable.me: So I take it your hair faded over the month? When you say blue, just how blue was it? My daughter wants sports-car colors, altho she'll accept lizard green that fades to banana.
@marshall47: Thank you so much! That clears up the mixing issue! I was all set to go buy mixing green but now I won't so you saved me some money and effort there. I will show my daughter (love you Dolly) the atomic pink and see what she thinks.
I'm 40 and have (random and mousy) gray that I cover with permanent color. It looks so much better touched up -- my gray hair isn't obediently flamboyant like my mother's kick-ass silver skunk spot.
I have been flirting with just not coloring it anymore and my husband (of many years) says either way is fine with him.
Is he full of shit?
I asked, "are you full of shit?" He says no, but he is amazingly resistant to interrogation. White hair, blobby bits, potato sack -- all is gorgeous.
@zivah: Well, roots kind of give me a clue, I guess, but they are so nondescript (I was a "dishwater blonde" - ugh) that I really can't picture that color all over my head. So I'm not sure how to answer you!
Whatevs, my genes cause cancer, so I'm at least gonna have pretty hair when I die.
@arodriguez.romero: cute mom.
@ItchykooParker: I got your dishwater right here.
@Jan74: I don't know what it means to have a natural color of 4. Explain? Sorry, I am ignorant. And I agree with you, with a patch in the back, I would prob. choose to do the same thing until the front catches up.
@arodriguez.romero: No problem! Also check out [www.amphigory.com] and the galleries (it's not very clear, but you can get to them by clicking on the name of the dye color) to get some idea of how the color will turn out. You can buy the dye there too if you can't find it locally. I'm not really sure where to suggest looking locally because Hot Topic recently stopped stocking it, and the only place I've been able to find it in Pittsburgh (though I haven't put much effort into it) is a punk/head/miscellaneous shop, so maybe check out places like that. I know that Sally's doesn't carry it. Good luck!
@zivah: Do you like it? Seriously? Because I have toyed with the idea of going back, but I'm not sure I can do it. I love being 'red'.
@arodriguez.romero: It was midnight blue, i mixed some electric blue and some purple dye. I think it's the only reason why my hair never faded so much. It usually took about a month and a half to two months to get to that green-ish hue that happens when your hair fades.
Green always fades super duper fast.
