Oh my. Today the Daily Mail wrote about an end-of-term party held by school kids in the North Lancashire village of Wray that turned into a "drunken orgy." According to the Mail "a large number of 14-year-old girls had drunken under-age sex at the party." Subsequently, school administrators at the Queen Elizabeth school have helped some of these girls get the morning after pill. Deputy headmistress Alison Hughes told the paper, "A lot of the children that came to us needed sexual healthcare. These are children we need to protect. Children that approached us to say it had gone on and said it was a very upsetting experience. We have had to help a lot of girls though the aftermath of having unprotected sex that evening - most of whom have told us they were too drunk to be in control of themselves. Thankfully there is a great deal of trust between ourselves and the children so they felt they could talk to us." [Daily Mail]

  • As a mother, I just about fainted.

    That's all.

This makes me want to stab something/someone. Can't make up my mind though.

  • They can definitely trust you tell the whole world, apparently.

  • Holy crap.

  • Counter that with this: [www.dailymail.com]

Seriously? The social studies teacher wasn't allowed to answer students' questions about sex?

I saw a Lifetime movie about something like this and its fucking scary.

Yes, so please let's not teach kids about sex. They might....do it.

  • Sounds like my 8th grade graduation afterparty. Thank God my mama wouldn't let me go.

Eep at the underage drunken orgy, but props to the school officials for helping girls in need.

Well, props to the school for helping in the aftermath and doing the responsible thing via morning after pills.

  • at least they helped them out 10 teenagers getting the morning after pill is no where near as bad as 10 teenagers having babies

  • I'm not a mother, but I remember being 14. I would've killed for those kind of adults in my life!

  • "These are children we need to protect." WTF? Where was your "protection" when this orgy was going on? (Or could you have at least provided them with some "protection" of the latex kind?)

That's it, I give up. I am heading for a beer.

  • Kids these days!

My old high school should've issued morning-after pills for the girls who had sex AT school.

  • You know, just the other day I was thinking how we used to play Spin the Bottle and Suck and Blow. And how kids today actually suck and blow.

  • First: I have to say, there were not nearly enough drunken orgies when I was 14... (none)
Second: I'm really impressed that they (apparently) acted with level heads and thought about the girls and their predicament, rather than going the self-righteous route and leaving them all to suffer the preggers fate.

Keep in mind that this is from the Daily Mail. I'm surprised they couldn't find an angle that made asylum-seekers responsible for everything.

Thank god these girls didn't have to see the doctor who wouldn't give one of our Jezzies Plan B; he would have made those little sluts pay for their sluttish sluttiness.

  • Image of lisas lisas at 02:54 PM on 03/21/08 *

Yes, thank the powers-that-be that the students trusted the teachers enough to tell them what happened and ask for help. If the parents won't or can't help, someone should.

  • Image of gherkinfiend gherkinfiend at 02:54 PM on 03/21/08 *

Let's hope the sobering experience of having to ask your teachers for the morning after pill knocks a bit of sense into these girls...

Slutty can be fun...but always protected and never too drunk to know what the hell is going on. These should be the golden rules for all girls of all ages!

  • "a large number of 14-year-old girls had drunken under-age sex at the party." But the boys didn't? Why the morning after pills then? I kid. I kid. No but seriously methinks I might have to read the article because it sounds like those poor traumatized boys might have been neglected by the author....

  • @JessicaLovejoy: Stars & Dykes Forever!: Wait. How do you play the later?

  • Image of lisas lisas at 02:55 PM on 03/21/08 *

Yes, thank the powers-that-be that the students trusted the teachers enough to tell them what happened and ask for help. If the parents won't or can't help, someone should.

Also, these kinds of crazed parties are a rite of passage dammit, I can't get on board with you, punkrockgirl.

  • Again I blame bullshit movies like American Pie, which make it seem like it's something strange to not be involved in drunken orgies.

And I'm not even the type who's all, "Blame the media!"

  • Image of bowleserised bowleserised at 02:56 PM on 03/21/08 *

@punkrockgirl: The party wasn't organised by the school, wasn't in school hours and wasn't on the school premises.

So props to them for helping the kids. But it wasn't their fault that it happened.

  • Image of Lizawithazee Lizawithazee at 02:57 PM on 03/21/08 *

Oh, and the item says only that the girls had sex. If the boys weren't involved, why do they need Plan B?

  • Wray is in the far north of England, almost to the Scottish border. It's literally the kind of place people send their children to get them away from the dangers of places like London and Manchester. Those parents must be absolutely beside themselves.

  • Kudos to dealing w/the reproductive health issue, but DAMN I can't believe none of the associated adults, or area police, "got-a-clue" till that many kids were falling down drunk and having public sex. I'm just stunned!!!

  • @howdybeep (oh, look -- a monkey): Use a business/credit card and pass it from mouth to mouth by...sucking and blowing. So you can eventually have an awkward but super-invigorating lip smash with the person next to you. I'm pretty sure we learned this from Clueless.

  • Image of briardahl briardahl at 03:03 PM on 03/21/08 *

@Lady Skittlehattington, Worsties Guild President: Thank god I missing the drunken-orgy scene in American Pie. Was it Jason Biggs vs. a bakery?

  • @howdybeep (oh, look -- a monkey): Suck & Blow - you use a card of some sort, like from your wallet, and you have to suck in to hold it against your mouth and successfully pass it (by 'blowing') to the person next to you. And if you're "unsuccessful," whoops! looks like our lips touched! I remember being at this boy/girl sleepover when I was in 8th grade (my mom picked me up before we actually went to sleep :( ) and we played suck&blow and I prayed and prayed that when my crush tried to pass it to me I would have the guts to let it slip and 'kiss' him. Buuuut, I didn't. Ahh well.

  • My virgin ears!

  • Where were these kids' parents?! I never would have been able to get away with going to a co-ed drinking party where sex was going on at the age of 14!

  • Image of stacyinbean stacyinbean at 03:10 PM on 03/21/08 *

Does anyone know (any English Jezzies here?) what type of 'health class' system they have over there?

  • I have to say, I'm very glad those girls got EC instead of a lecture. Of course, this kind of situation is what you get with abstinence education. It's the chickens coming home to roost. Or fuck.

  • "We have had to help a lot of girls though the aftermath of having unprotected sex that evening - most of whom have told us they were too drunk to be in control of themselves."

Um, "too drunk to be in control of themselves," as in what? Passed out? Incapable of coherent speach? Methinks the boys should have gotten a lecture about what constitutes too drunk to consent to sex while the girls were getting their Plan B. Obviously we don't have enough details here, but it doesn't sound like a very good situation.

  • Image of lisas lisas at 03:18 PM on 03/21/08 *

@NotAPrettyGirl: When I visited my family in small-town England (Malvern), I went to the pub with my (very) underaged brother and sister. There were 13-year-old girls there, in hooker boots sipping alcopops. Not a one of them had to sneak out from under their parent's noses.

  • .@lisas: well, that answers my question about how 14 year olds could be holding keggers.

  • There were 13-year-old girls there, in hooker boots sipping alcopops. Not a one of them had to sneak out from under their parent's noses."

    @lisas: depressing.

All of it, the wole article. If 18 year olds (even 17 year olds, but that's my arbitrary line) drink a little, fine.

Kids dressed like adults (adult whores, for girls, I guess) in bars? Not on board.

  • Image of Lymed Lymed at 03:25 PM on 03/21/08 *

The film "Kids" should be a mandatory part of the school curriculum. I was so angry when that movie came out rated NR, just to make sure none of the teenagers who actually needed to see it could.

  • @gherkinfiend: You absolutely should get best comment of the day. "Slutty can be fun...always protected...never too drunk to know what the hell is going on." Right on, sister!

And much credit to the responsible adults who provided after-care. YESSSSS! Some good news, for once!

  • "Sexual Healthcare" - was that a Marvin Gaye B-side?

The British have better names for everything.

  • Image of Lymed Lymed at 03:28 PM on 03/21/08 *

@lisas: When I was 14 I went to England with my high school soccer team. As soon as we got to our host family, the mother asked me and my friend how old we were and then said "Take 'em to the pub." I believe I wore a leather skirt, but it was almost knee length and no hooker boots.

  • @brendastarlet: It is not too hard to hold keggers when you are 14, all you have to do is wait for the parents to go out of town and have an older friend or relative buy the alcohol and it is set.
We also use to hold parties in the backyards of classmates whose whole family went out of town.

  • I remember going to a party in 8th grade where we played a very planned out game of seven minutes in heaven. None of the boys there had the balls to try much of anything much less initiate sex. I guess if there had been a little more alcohol there things might have been different. I never thought I would say this, but Thank God for (relatively) dry parties.

  • If this had occurred in the US - teachers or school officials assisting girls in obtaining Plan B - the teachers would be sued, dismissed, made into the Devil incarnate by parents, the media and the religions right. That said, I think that it is fantastic that, not only could these girls trust their teachers, but that the teachers helped them. And I don't think that "reporting it to the world" was in any way a betrayal of that trust. Letting people know what goes on with children as young as 14 is a service to those who don't or would rather not know. Hopefully it sparks conversations between parent and children.

  • @LinaLamont: we had neighbors like you, the cool kids. I was never allowed to go. Sniff.

  • The word "rape" is implied here but never stated. I'm confused. I thought it seemed obvious that the girls didn't give their consent, but the word is never used -- not in the article, nor in this post. Am I mistaken? I know kids have sex much younger in the UK than in America, but the details imply that something else is going on there.

  • According to the Mail "a large number of 14-year-old girls had drunken under-age sex at the party."

Whew -- good thing only girls were having sex.

  • So...I kissed a boy at 12, and that was HUGE, right? Fast forward 7 years later (we have quite the age difference) to my brother, now in 8th grade, telling me about the BJ his 13 year old friend got from a 12 year old girl. As if that thought weren't horrifying enough, being the non-parent adult, I had to explain about protection for oral sex BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T COVER THAT IN SEX ED. If they had even had sex ed yet.

Gods, education, people, education! Maybe they wouldn't do it in middle school if they actually understood the risks! Let's get some scary-ass slideshows together, y'all!

  • @sixseeds: Isnt it crazy?? I remember when a girl was "sooo slutty" in 8th Grade if she "got fingerbanged." Now drunken orgies?? I am 24 and have never had one (dont want one thankuverymuch) but I have never even been somewhere where one would've occurred! (And I've partied, trust).

  • @Lymed: Yes, Kids scarred my 12 year old mind.

  • @brendastarlet: It has nothing to do with being "cool" or not. If kids want drink and throw parties they will find a way no matter how involved their parents and school are.

  • @briardahl: Give it time. Everything is either the fault of feminism/immigration/Thatcher no longer being in power.

  • The school sounds like a practical, humane, non-judgemental place. Which is exactly where I'd want to send my daughter.

That said, I hope all concerned--and I mean the boys here too!--got a serious fucking lecture about how not to make really shitty decisions regarding alcohol and sex.

  • yeah - they dont have great sex ed at home (UK) if i remember rightly ... hence the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in europe.

i have friend whose parents made her 14 yr old sister forceably get and IUD because they knew she was having sex and were worried she wasnt reponsible enough to take the pill or use condoms.

On the other hand i do think parents in the US molly coddle their kids a bit much - when i was travelling a few years ago i remember staying with american friends when i was here whose parents couldnt belive my parents had LET me go off round the world alone (i was 22).

That said young kids at home are getting out of control. its not just the drinking its the violence as well - i hear so many stories of gangs of teenage boys and girls terrorizing people on the streets - its really scary
