A baby was born with two faces in India. This sort of reminds me of this time the same thing happened with a kitten, which led my ex-boyfriend and me into a stoney discussion about the fine line between "creepy" and "cute." Villagers are worshiping the baby as a reincarnated god, offering it money and prayers in exchange for its blessings. Certainly if the same thing happened here, we would be giving money and praying too, but sort of in a different way. [Fox News]

There are SO many people in India that everything weird happens there.
This is insane.
Whoa. That's tripping me out. I was going to make some "MIrror Has Two Faces" comment, but now I got nothin.
I do like, however, that this was tagged "miracles." That makes me happy.
What's with all the really bizarre babies from India stories lately? First it was that cute little girl born with eight legs. Then, it was the woman who went to pee and her baby popped out, Now it's the baby with two faces.
Sweet wounded Jesus.
That's not nearly as creepy as the multi-limbed baby a couple of months ago.
Wow. Looks like the faces share a little dimple.
That's crazy
That's really disarming. I really like the villagers' reaction. I wish our society responded to mutations like they're gifts from God instead of curses! And I hope the baby (babies? are they conjoined twins) survive into adulthood.
Man, our eggs can do some CRAZY stuff. Miracles indeed!
Is that a shared dimple - cuteness.
Where was that guy from whose HPV made him look like a tree trunk? Anyone remember that guy?
im curious, do both faces work? ( for lack of a better term).
@Le Kangourou de Kataroo: Yes, that could certainly have gone a different way- like evil omen. I hope they worship this baby. It is pretty awesome.
@thenwemadeout: oh ew, yes. His skin turned all bark-like. Bodies are insane, this is why I try and mess with mine as little as possible.
@Emily: I find that totally wonderful as well. Here, they'd put her in an iron lung or something terrible, but India's all "sweet! She must be a goddess! Let's give her pancakes!"
Rock on, India.
There was also the little girl born in India with 8 limbs recently.
I would SO love a two-faced kitten! Or anything fluffy with two faces.
I just hope little Miss is healthy and functioning with her unusual countenance(s). I'm glad that she was born there, where it was taken as a beautiful blessing.
@thenwemadeout: And his hands looked like a pomeranian were attached?
Yeah, that poor guy.
@mepo: I was thinking it was a shared ear. Admittedly less cute.
That poor child. But at least people are regarding her as a miracle and not a freak. If she were born here some crazies would probably think she was the devil or try to exploit her.
awwww... I still think about Lakshmi (the 8 limbed baby). I wonder what this child's life is going to be like...
it's a good thing they are treating the baby well instead of freaking out or killing it or something. not that Indians would necessarily do that, but it makes me think of how many ancient peoples would just expose babies that were born different. yay for a miracle baby!
@NotAPrettyGirl: On a related note, my sister is convinced that she could only love her babies if they came out furry, like kitties.
@LoveNoelG: POMERANIAN. HA! Too much. But yeah, that guy. Phew, that's a tough one. There were so many crazy human body things a few months back. There was also a guy who had a tumor removed from his face that was like 90 lbs. and he kept falling over backward once they took it off. I will never complain about my body again...
@Emily: Sadly, I doubt the baby will. With all the wiring in your head, I'd think there will be some sort of damage.
I love that they treat the baby as a special blessing. As hard as this must be for the family, at least their child is being honored instead of ridiculed.
I wonder if there is one or two brains? Also, if each set of eyes, noses, and mouths work. Thanks for doing some investigating Fox News! grr.
@Muffyn: I think about her all the time and wonder the same thing. I have not heard anything since her surgetry a couple months ago.
@misssgolightly: I think babies like that are probably born in the US, too (albeit much less frequently). The difference is that here I suspect they get whisked away to a backroom OR and "fixed" as soon as possible.
thank god for indians who embrace and revere the bizarre instead of treating it as a freak show.
at least we have fox news to do the latter...
@ScarletBegonias: I am super curious too. if she has one brain and 2 faces are all 4 eyes connected to her optic nerves? she'll be recieving so much sensory infformation. this is messing with my mind
HAHA! Your sister and I should be friends. That's definitely something I would say!
Puppies & kittens> babies.
Painfully cute.
So, this sort of birth defect must happen in the US, too. Is it just that people abort those fetuses, or they are whisked off to surgery or what? Why don't we ever here of this sort of thing happening in the US?
@ScarletBegonias: Uh, my question as well. One body, just the double face? Do both sides do the same thing, since there's just one brain?
thank goodness it has a positive ending.
if that baby was born here, well, we'd probably give the family their own reality show. Sad huh?
@LadyNo: Sorry, my last comment (regarding fluffy puppies and babies) was supposed to be to you!
@Emily: I think it's one living baby with a partially absorbed twin.
@ScarletBegonias: That's what I want to know.
I'm tripping, man.
@bokkie: Ha! You preemptively answered my questions, AND we both used the word "whisked."
@NotAPrettyGirl: She was dating a really hairy guy for a while, and we were like, maybe your dream will finally come true! Furry babies!
@keldo: perhaps something to do with the fact that some of their gods have more than the "normal" number of appendages? This is a suggestion from someone who is completely ignorant about Hinduism.
@LadyNo: yeah it probably gets discovered during a sonogram so parents can do as they wish.
i demand a scientific explanation or i am going to implode
I'm genuinely conflicted about this.
While I think the way this child and Lakishma (whoa, prob bad SP) are examples of the beauty that can be found in humans - being treated as a miracle rather than a monster - I am deeply concerned about what this says about the state of health and access to healthcare in India.
To them they made be gods re-incarnated, but does this mean the mother did not receive ANY pre-natal health care? Did they not see this in an ultrasound, or did the mother have no ultra-sound?
And what about the child's health? I know some ppl didnt want Lakishma to have the leg operation; well this child be okay?
@LadyNo: Hee. Maybe we were face twins in another life!
@LadyNo: I want my baby to have a tail, so I can relate to your sister.
You could read the paper and drink your coffee at the same time. brilliant!
Unrelated sidenote: that article Moe linked about the two-faced kitten is the fucking WEIRDEST thing ever - and not even because of the kitten! The dude wanted to sell the kitten body on eBay so he could use the profits to make a GUN CANNON!? Nothing says wackjob like using eBay to fund your backwoods weapons development.
...do they move in unison? I have such a voyeristic curiousity towards them and it feels wrong...
That is interesting because both faces are so gosh darned cute! What if it were an ugly baby with two ugly faces? Or one cute face and one ugly face?
@LadyNo: I'm thinking it might be something seen in an ultrasound? The medical care is poorer in many area of Indian, so they don't 'catch' it early.
And in America the doctors would probably suggest termination.
@LadyNo: Haha! Thanks for the laugh. I needed it today.
"villagers are worshiping the baby as a reincarnated god" - I always knew god was two-faced.
@Leiakat: Areas of India.
This day need to end soon...
A woman I work with found out her baby has birth defects. Sad.
Oh! Baby Lakshmi, how I miss her so.
I recently read that baby Lakshmi is now able to walk.
As for this baby, why did Jezebel refer to her as an "it"?
