CBS President Les Moonves blames Katie Couric's ailing ratings on old men who are turned off by the idea of a female anchor. At the McGraw Hill Companies' Media Summit in New York today Moonves said: "Katie has lost mostly 55-plus-year-old men from [when she replaced] Bob Schieffer." He continued, "Are we thrilled with Katie's ratings? No. But are we thrilled with the product? Yes." CBS News continues to implement changes to its broadcasts in order to draw younger viewers, though relying on younger viewers to make up the bulk of your evening news viewership seems incredibly foolish. No one under 89 watches the evening news anymore! Get your head out of your ass and onto the internet, Mister! [MediaWeek]

God I miss Peter Jennings.
I don't watch the evening news, Les.
And even if I did, I would watch NBC instead. I like Brian Williams far more than Katie Couric. Didn't like her on the Today show either.
Actually Katie has bad rating because...well...she sucks at her job.
You know what I'm not thrilled with, Moonves? You giving your wife primetime jobs when she is absolutley, monumentally awful.
Big Brother isn't exactly high art, but goddamn the Chenbot is a disaster.
(I know it has nothing to do with this but anytime Moonves is mentioned, I have to rant)
I like watching Charlie Gibson on ABC.
Also Brian Williams is really attractive. I don't watch the news, but if I did I would watch him.
um... maybe they're turned off by her hideous nature and heinous looking face? just sayin'...
I used to love the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather. Bob Schieffer was a pretty good replacement, but Katie? Feh. I don't think her failure comes from being a woman, I think it comes from being annoying and not asking good questions. Get Leslie Stahl in that seat and I'll watch your show again, Les.
Let's just replace all male TV personalities with women, and force the sexist old fucks to get used to it.
Oh, you don't like it? Read a magazine, then. Fuckhead.
I'm another BriWi fan, as is my mom (who fits squarely into the evening newscast demographic.)
There has been a rumor for a while that Katie would serve through the November elections and then move on. I wonder if this is laying the groundwork. If so, we've got months more of this to go.
Really? The experiment of putting a soft-focus morning anchor on the evening news didn't work? Color me shocked.
I am going with the other matron of CBS Leslie Stahl, who blows Katie out of the water.
I would rather watch 60 minutes than the nightly news any day of the week.
I'm Brian Williams all the way. Katie rubs me the wrong way. I like Meredith Viera better too in the morning. No good at night, no good in the morning. Maybe she can replace Letterman next?
Charlie Gibson here. And before that Peter Jennings. I've always watched ABC, because that's what my parents and grandparents watched, and I like the way they present the news better than the other stations. I never watched the Today Show because of Katie Couric's dead eyed stare and colon pics, why would I take her seriously on the evening news?
dear cbs, since we already know the news is bullshit and all you give a fuck about is advertising dollars from ratings, why not just find two really hot naked people as anchors? one of each sex, so there's something for everyone to ogle and keep it politically correct. thank you.
Whenever I hear Les Moonves, I immediately think of Moon Vest outside of CBS--you know, Kenneth the page's friend.
Seriously, I watch zero nightly news because I'm either on the train going home or waiting for a damn bus at the train station to take me to my parking garage because my commute is long. I don't get home until 7. And even if I did, I'd watch Brian Williams. I tried watching Katie, but all of her years on Today ruined her credibility, and I'd say the same about Matt Lauer were he to anchor the nightly news--they've peddled too much fluff to me over the years.
I've given up on news really. It's not actual news anymore, and it is far too depressing and sensational most of the time. I miss Walter Conkrite -- when he talked, I listened, because he made it seem as if the news was important to me. Now the news seems to be for the generic viewer, which news organizations seem to be hoping will find most of what they peddle or at least scary enough that they will keep watching.
@Mediaweek:"No one under 89 watches the evening news anymore!"
So true! My grandmother is 90, but she refuses to watch KatieCo. She's a BriWi (rhymes with WiFi?) fan.
@Mediaweek:"Get your head out of your ass and onto the internet, Mister!"
It must've been Couric's on-air colonoscopy on TODAY that got Les Moonves' interested in her. FWIW, he married the lightest of lightweight talking heads, Julie Chen.
I have no problem getting my news from a woman. Elizabeth Vargas is my fave on ABC (sorry Charlie). I just have a problem with Katie. I agree with South Park. One Katie Couric is equal to 2.5 lbs of human excrement.
My first three crushes were Peter Jennings, Ed Bradley, and Paul Moliter. I'm still not sure how on earth did I let Moliter in with that distinguished group.
Those same old men also won't vote for Hillary. OH NOES!
Screw McGraw Hill. They closed MarineLand to build a office building!
Plus, their textbooks suck.
@kshenkshen: Amen. And he goes on The Daily Show ALL the time. Yes please.
Hey, I watch the evening news! And my desire to sleep with Brian Williams only has about 60%, 70% tops, to do with it!
Les Moonves is the face of evil. I'm convinced, and have been for years.
Also, I've never forgiven him for cancelling Joan of Arcadia because of course America would prefer to look at Jennifer Love Hewitt's boobs. Granted, it turns out he's right. But damn it!
@LinaLamont: she just sucks. Not a decent journo either. I still seeth remembering her grilling an eleven year-old on watching his friend drown - the parents should be beaten too.
I like Bob Schieffer -- he's old school news man, in a good way.
And I like Brian Williams based on the fact that he has been a giant looming head on The Daily Show.
I like Katie Couric--I usually watch the news on podcast, not tv though. My fiance totally has the hots for her.
Deep heretofore unspoken fear: Julie Chen will replace Katie next... **shudder**
