Hot Nationalist Girls Gone Wild!

  • The latest YouTube sensation: Serbs in white jeans go on a shoplifting spree in heroic protest of Kosovar independence! It is like the "Chocolate Rain" of crappy people. They don't even seem drunk. Just greedy! (Video after jump)
  • The cameraman told to "Get lost" by the girl so bogged down in stolen shit she can barely walk gets my I Want To Have His Babies Award for his response... [Reuters]
  • The McCain sex scandal is dumb and now the New York Times has to do more damage control than Mr. Inappropriation himself. [NYT]
  • But something happy came of it: "Stray Cock Express." [Alternet]

  • The Arizona co-chair of the McCain campaign gets charged with all manner of bribery and corruption and yet again McCain escapes unscathed because the whole thing makes the Bush Justice Department look way worse. [DailyKos]
  • Which is why McCain gets to spread all sorts of untruths about how Barack Obama wants to bomb Pakistan and cheat on his taxes without anyone but America's voters really paying attention. [Media Matters]
  • Remember when Moby and Natalie Portman used to do it? No? Then this is the post for you. [NY Mag]
  • Everyone was on us to write about that inane "wow girls use the internet too OMG!" story in yesterday's Times. God was that dumb. I feel less empowered being a girl who used the internet to read that fucking story. [Doree]
  • McCain hopes Fidel Castro "meets Marx soon." I think the only medium nuanced and sophisticated enough to adequately respond to this sentiment is South Park, but it does make the whole afterlife concept sound kinda fun, no? [Reuters]
  • Enron: where are they now? Well, Jeff Skilling is in jail for the next twentysomething years, Andy Fastow gets out in five, and some bankers who skimmed a few million from some phony partnership — "victims," really, of Skilling's "culture of greed" — are about to go to prison for three years apiece. I wonder if Ken Lay has met Marx? [Time]
  • The Hillary campaign is not looking so good. [Economist]
  • I guess I should really see No Country For Old Men before Sunday but Step Up 2 The Streets looks like it could be pretty good too. [NYT]

I'm totally not trying to be a stick poker, but I just read through the last two Crappy Hours and I feel exhausted.

  • I'm all for calling nerdy sluts "mobys"

  • Just because I like Moby's music doesn't mean I'd do him. Also, that picture in NY Mag is scary.

  • I really think it's time to change the Jezebel header to include "politics" or "issues" or something else substantive, because clearly "Celebrity, Sex, Fashion for Women" is just not cutting it anymore. The womyn are gettin organized, ya'll!

  • @sassymoniker: Never! Let the naysayers think all we do is talk about the latest scrapbooking scissors or something while we secretly plan the revolution (and design cute arm bands to identify each other).

  • I'm perplexed about this:

In American high schools, girls comprised fewer than 15 percent of students who took the AP computer science exam in 2006, and there was a 70 percent decline in the number of incoming undergraduate women choosing to major in computer science from 2000 to 2005, according to the National Center for Women & Information Technology.

I wish they'd link their references, I wanna see what's that about.

  • @AnnoyingFemaleLeadVoiceover: Ooh armbands! I do love to accessorize.

  • And, this is why all that nationalism is kind of a crock of shit. Sure, there are definitely some idiots who genuinely believe in it, but for the most part, "believe" = "use it as an excuse to get drunk an act like an asshole/loot stores/commit war crimes". Politicians like Milosevic were easily able to manipulate the anger and frustration inherent in a transitioning society and use nationalism to his advantage, very cynically, without actually believing in any of it.
This is also why these sweeping generalizations piss me off, like "All Serbs are evil war criminals." Yes, every society has its bad and good elements, and before people make snap judgments about Serbia as a whole based on this, remember this is also the same country that very recently voted in Boris Tadic as prime minister, who is about as liberal-thinking and pro-western as it gets over there.

  • @That_little_attention_whore: True. And take a look at those kids looting and rioting. Sure, some of them do it for political/nationalist reasons, but a while lot of them are just doing it for free stuff and the fun they derive from wanton destruction. Those people are found everywhere on planet Earth, and are most dangerous when gathered in large numbers.

  • Meh, I wouldn't really hold that Castro comment against McCain. The whole world's been waiting for the old bastard to croak for a while now.

@fishlikesequins: But did he really need to say it? It just reminded of that "bomb Iran" crap, I hate loose cannons.

  • @stacyinbean: No, he didn't need to say it. He really shouldn't have said it at all, I just can't blame him for feeling that way. I've heard the "will you just hurry up and die already?" sentiment about Castro a hundred different ways from a hundred different people so I don't really think what he said was that out-there or offensive. Anyway, such as.

  • The dumb bitches are now being sued. What sort of an idiot would let herself be taped stealing and then say it was 'to protest because of Kosovo'? Scratch that, they said (on TV, nonetheless): "Everyone was stealing, and so were we. ...I don't see what the problem is. We didn't kill anyone." Problem is, they used a national tragedy to get themselves a new pair of ugly shoes and 3-4 golden jackets (?!). Gah.
McCain. Binding communists all over the world, baby... in the afterlife. Ah, SP will have so much fun with this. Though obviously the reaping matchmaker hasn't been paying much attention to Marx, else he'd know what Castro was doing had nothing to do with Marx's ideology. But ah well.

  • Ugh. Watching that video brought back the shame I felt as a New Orleanean watching video of people looting there after katrina. I had no problem with people taking water, diapers & food - it's not like you could BUY them anywhere within a 2 hr drive. But I couldn't understand the wide screen tv thing. Just like the shoes & jacket that girl stole - what does that have to do with anything but a total lack of class.

  • McCain just said what every Cuban living in the US probably feels....and has felt for about 15 years. Should he have said it? I don't know. Big deal? No.

McCain is about as interesting as a dirt sandwich. The "scandal" the other day was about the most interesting thing to ever said about him. That sure backfired on the publisher. That Huckabee guy, please. I like leaving the kitchen and getting my tubes tied b/c I am done having kids. And rape is rape, dude. Obama just doesn't turn my crank, and Hillary, I haven't liked since the first campaign in the 90's for Bill. I am totally 100% disgusted with our choices this year. For the first time in my adult life, I have no desire to vote for any candidate for president. At all. It bums me out.

That said, I can still think of at least one thing in the last 20 yrs that made me proud of my country. Sorry, couldn't resist.

  • The looters are just greedy people who would take advantage of any chaotic situation. It doesn't matter that they are Serbs, they are just idiots, and every country has some.

  • I want an armband!

Also, I cannot say with any certainty that I would be able to hold on to my higher morals if I was walking down the street and saw somebody smash open the JCrew. I'd like to think that I would keep walking, but...

  • @randomthoughts: Have you considered any of the "third parties"? It's better than throwing your vote away.

  • "Step Up 2 The Streets" was entertaining, for a movie about hip-hop dance in which all of the main characters were white.
