Okay, people: just 5 days left until we have to close out the submissions for the inaugural edition of our new feature "Past Fashion"! What we're looking for this month: The best and worst hairstyles on our black female readers, whether from childhood or adulthood. (That's one of our readers' submissions, at left. Love. It!) Don't have anything to offer? Send this notice onto someone who might...or does. We'll be putting up the post at the end of the month, as well as announcing the theme for the March edition of the feature. Those who desire to remain "anonymous" (i.e. have their facial features blurred out) are welcome to say so. Send submissions to photos@jezebel.com with the title "Past Fashion" in the subject header.

Wait, is that the superhero Ferocia Coutura?
I remember when that style was cool. I requested it when I was 7 or 8, but it didn't really pan out seeing as I'm white and had stick-straight hair at the time. When the curls fell out a couple hours later, I found out I was left with a mullet.
Sigh.
OK, who is it? Spill!
OMG, SOOOO CUTE!
*sends e-mail to mom requesting all of this images she asked her to burn but knows she didn't*
I think I had that exact same shirt, or at least something very similar.
Awesome pic:) I've been there too! Now that I'm an adult, I have the courage to say that the curly haired mullet was a part of my childhood. I'd like to know who that is.
That's adorable! Come on, fess up!
You know, I bet this person has really AWESOME hair right now. Those curls would be beautiful minus the mullet.
Oh, I'm too afraid to post any of my photos. Too, too afraid. Ok, gimme 'til tonight when I can dig some up.
I am waiting for the glasses edition. You heffers have nothing on me.
Cuuuute.
I personally am looking forward to the side-pony post.
Man, I wish you wanted white girls' photos. I had a wicked wispy mullet in '81 when my uncle was in hair school, and I'm wearing an ET baseball shirt in the pic. I've shown it to hipsters before to illustrate how I did the '80s HARD the first time.
OMG.. there's a lady in my office that still rocks this hairdo!!!
@amoureuse: I don't know about that. I was farsighted in the eighties. Doesn't get much worse than that.
@HRHKingFriday: See, I got a perm FIRST, then the mullet cut, to complete the whole thing on my super straight white girl hair. I'm SO excited to find out I'm not the only one this happened to, I was traumatized for YEARS!
@Reluctant Financier: Fess up...it's you isn't it?
I think she's adorable, even with the poodle cut!
@amoureuse: Me too. I had purple glasses with rainbows. And Richard Simmons hair. WOO!
@TruculentandUnreliable: @amoureuse: No way, ladies. I have 20/750 vision, and my lenses in 7th grade were beyond coke-bottle.
What month is for bucked-teeth and freckles??
I also have stick-straight hair, but managed to rock this 'do (bangs at least!) for about 30 minutes every morning in seventh grade. I do not miss those days, nor the smell of Aqua-Net.
omg, cute!
What a cute little girl! That hair kinda looks like my mom's perm from the 80's. Or AC Slater's frizzy mullet.
I bet she has really pretty long curly hair now!
@Lady Skittlehattington: Huge salmon pink bifocals with barrets everywhere and red velour pants. Thanks mom.
@stacyinbean: Yes, I'm so glad I wasn't able to take it to the next level- my parents wouldn't allow perms until I was 16.
I had what I affectionately refer to as a poodle mullet, which was accomplished by PERMING the front half of my head while leaving the back half long and bone straight. It was not a good look.
@allora: I will totally win bucked teeth and freckles month.
Haha you totally need a month for self-inflicted fashion. Right before school pictures in second grade, I shaved my eyebrows off--not entirely, but mostly.
So cute. I can't participate this time, but when you have your giant bangs and glasses category I will totally win.
Man, I had that exact same hairstyle, except it was red red.
@amoureuse: This glasses edition can not come soon enough.
I hella want to visit my parents now just to get a bad pic, my childhood was full of them. My dad used to love taking pictures of me while my mom was doing my hair, usually during the blowout part where I looked like I stole Chaka Khan's hair.
Damnit. All of my horrible hair pictures are with my parents. Oh man, do I have some bad hair stories to tell.
@Brianne: AHH. bowl-cut bangs and turtleneck sweaters.
@allora: @BAngieB: Oh, I was buck-toothed rabbit/jack-o-lantern mouth before braces, so I could probably give you guys a run for your money. I also have some fabulous mall bangs shots.
My super straight hair luckily prevented me from too many bad 80's and early 90's hair. Also I have a super fashionable aunt that made sure I never looked crazy. My best cut came when I asked for and got Uma Turman's Pulp fiction do at 13!
But I could totally win a contest for gappy pre-braces teeth. Or giant eyebrows.
@BAngieB: Ha! Totes! Because I'm definitely a strong black woman.. or was that Kathy Griffin, I can't recall.
@HRHKingFriday: My mother's best friend was a hair dresser and convinced my mom it would be good for my hair! I didn't speak to that woman for over 5 years...
i would rock the "denim look" pictures like no body's business!. ugh, the things my mom dressed me in!!! (young 'un here)
@cupcakesofdeath: That sounds like my fourth grade picture! Plus, my mom thought I should get purple glasses because I have green eyes. At the age of 8 I knew I'd look like Barney the Dinosaur and said so, but she conned me into getting them with the promise of a Coke, a rare treat in my house. Well, I got the Coke, but it certainly wasn't worth the next three years of those glasses.
I recently came upon my fourth grade school picture. I look exactly the same, was even wearing the same general type of shirt and had absentmindedly tucked my hear behind the ear the same way. Except my teeth looked way bigger back then. I'm 44.
@amoureuse: Ha! I totes can beat you with the glasses. I would have to narrow down the pics.@nowimpissed: That sounds like an ...interesting hair do.
She looks soo cute!
@HRHKingFriday: I had my hair permed like that in 5th grade. My mom thought I needed a little "body".
@DorothyZbornak: &@BAngieB: It is on, ladies!!
:)=
god, i love this feature. can we do scrawney and knock-kneed, too?
this is hilarious.
@BAngieB: You just keep getting cuter the more I learn about you.
This is a really weird request. Why is Jezebel asking women to make themselves feel embarrassed and scrutnized about their appearance? Isn't this what your arch-enemies, skinny blonde chicks, unempowered suburban housewives, clueless Republican teens etc. do?
Are you, Jezebel, hypocritical? And/or are you just as terrified as conservative women that you may be ugly and no man will want you and you will die alone, but you just hide it better, behind a wall of hipster irony and feminist rhetoric?
And why black women specifically? Do you not know or care that despite your liberal racial sensitivity certificates, you're essentially asking black women to mock their hair when they were kids, before they realized how to use straighteners, relaxers, weaves and wigs to get their hair all straight and you know, normal. Just like dem white girls, massa. How much fun is it to poke fun at a little girl with supposedly shitty hair, Jezebel? Oh right, she's black. And those people have weird hair.
I believe Little Richard rocked this look last night when he performed...
@Crazydogggz: Um...I prefer to wait and see what they are gonna do with the pix. I assume every type of woman will have her day.
I haven't known Jez to openly mock any woman - no matter her background. So, might be best to wait and see what they do with these pictures.
@Crazydogggz: LOL
@Crazydogggz: You must be new here... our hair woes garner much a harrowed tale 'round these parts.
@Crazydogggz: you mised the ballpark entirely!
@Lady Skittlehattington: I see your purple glasses with rainbows and raise you purple EKs (Emmanuel Khans) with brown snakeskin trim.
@Brianne: Ha! I convined MYSELF to get purple-framed glasses to go with my green eyes!! This was only...3 years ago, though.
