Fashion week stomps on! Yesterday's collections included Derek Lam, Tommy Hilfiger, Reem Acra, Calvin Klein, Bill Blass and Zac Posen. The day saw lots of tragically romantic dresses (Ophelias on opium) and lots of skinny, menswear-inspired suits for women (David Bowie). Derek Lam's collection was dominated by dark colors, but instead of somber, the mood was deeply rich and romantic. Plush coats, matchy-matchy suits and party dresses for incurable flirts. Tommy Hilfiger's extremely simplistic, basic designs were almost too safe; Reem Acra whipped up whimsical red-carpet fantasies. As for Bill Blass, designed by Peter Som, there were polished, rich bitch outfits for uptown heiresses. Calvin Klein is designing for a future happening right now, and if you love minimalism, he delivers. For the maximalists (like myself): Zac Posen killed it with Disney-princess gowns and '80s goth-Lolita crinolines (the 8th grader inside me weeps for the pink dress!) Sure, his ridiculous shoes made model Karen Elson fall, (above left) but Diddy was there! To help her up! Jennifer and I designate the good, the bad and the ugly in annotated galleries located after the jump.

Did that model fall down? Is that the deal?
PS Ophelia killed herself over a MAN. Is that the message we're supposed to get, O Designers?
Those Calvin Klein looks are making me think of Brave New World, and not in a good way.
Let me repeat myself: What have I learned from Fashion week? Sheer black tights are all I need and Calvin Klein is dressing all their models in the exact same thing. The end. SO BORED.
fucking christ. at first i thought, from that intro pic of her on the ground, that she was posing, and crawling up the runway. what a terrifying dress, face, woman. vampire. thing.
diddy. yummy.
Love that Karen Elson kept a smile on her face despite the fall.
I don't know what the hell happened to Zac Posen. He's been doing craptacular designs lately.
I love Karen Elson though, I was so psyched to see her in the runway!
I would fall down so diddy, excuse me, sean combs, would help me up. that'd be a great story!
...espeically because when i fall people just laugh.
I have an insane love of crinolines. I don't even care if these outfits are crazy, I need more crinolines in my life.
I love that Diddy was a gentleman and stood up to help, instead of her being tossed aside like the proverbial fashion roadkill.
is that caroline t and p diddy?
@blondegrlz:
Don't we all?! :)
@katatwork: very, very Interview-esque. Correct.
@blondegrlz: my favorite pageant dress was a big poofy princess dress with a full crinoline skirt- we called it the cupcake dress because when i squatted down it poofed up all around me and i felt like one of those cupcake dolls that would change from cupcake to fabulously dressed girl. mmm... princess dresses.
I am completely confused by the hairy dress in Blass's collection, and yet I find it strangely, utterly compelling. The whole collection is just yum, and that pantsuit is totally bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, nevah nevah let you forget you're a man, 'cause ahm a WOMAN!
(Sorry, had a seventies moment there.)
Okay, not completely on topic, but I just wanna say, I LOVE fashion week, if only for the entertainment value of getting high and watching Channel 25 (NYCTV?) alll niiiight lonnnng, baby. Seriously, look in to it.
I'm a total maximalist too. That's why, despite being generally against wedding fever, I was totally psyched about being able to wear a big, puffy ballgown. I am a thrifty, eco-friendly, non-profiteer, and I am always fighting the urge to overdress.
@leMaldeTete: hear hear! here here! heeer heeer!
Um... obvy as my avatar is the fabulous Mr. Bowie circa 1977, any fashions that cause me to channel him are a-ok by me. Love.
Also, look at Caroline's redurk shoes. I can only assume that Karen was wearing a similar pair, and therefore, it is no wonder that she fell. Who the hell makes people walk in those things (I'm looking at you, Zac Posen)??!
@dosido: As a teen, bringing bacon home, frying, and manhood reminders seemed to fab. Sigh. It's actually a lot of work. En-Jo-Leeee!
@katastic: The drama nerd in me (okay, that's a lie - the drama nerd that *is* me) requires me to point out that Ophelia didn't necessarily kill herself over a man. It's debatable whether she even "killed herself" or just fell in the water and died. She did, however, go insane over a man. But he killed her dad, so I don't blame her.
Also, if there's a look that you can describe with the word "Ophelia," chances are I'm going to at least get a kick out of it.
Also also, David Bowie is welcome in my channel anytime.
@Kataroo_Kangaroo @treecut: My wedding dress had a crinoline. I have tons of pictures of me sitting in the middle of my dress like I'm floating on a cloud. It was fabulous and super princessy. And I can say that now since this isn't a wedding thread.
I got married in an a-line because I'm not coordinated enough to handle a full length crinoline in and out of cars after a bottle of champagne :-(
The whole floating on a cloud thing sounds nice.
Good post guys! I <3 Zac Posen. That is all!
It's official: all I want to do in life is wear that grey-blue Zac Posen skinny suit every day.
I know what I'll dream about tonight: the grey/red Zac Posen dress and/or the red/bedazzled Reem Acra dress.
Love the Zac clothes, but the mouseketeer ears are stupid.
I can haz Derek Lam and Reem Acra?
Aww poor Karen! Good to see she totally didn't give a shit and laughed it off, though.
Also, surprised David Bowie didn't tell Zac Posen to incorporate eye patches.
I can't belive Diddy broke the forth wall! Good for him.
@leMaldeTete: I do this but with cocktails instead of weed.
Christ, that last girl in the Klein collection in the black jumper dress thing looks like she'd snap in half in a strong wind. Her arms look like toothpicks and her neck and head look glued on. It's creeping me the fuck out. Can I give her a few sammiches??
@hatepaperdoll: Yeah, he earned a few points in my book.
And, as I am a minimalist, I loooooved everything at Calvin Klein (and Bill Blass, but that's for when I'm older). It just reminded me of how sad I've been for the last week because I went to the CK 70% off sale and there wasn't anything left in my size. Because I totally would have worn that extra-long cardigan today. Or the sequinned tank dress.
That's what Ms. Elson gets for marrying my man! Yes, Jack While will be mine, someday...
This has made me like P Diddy a little, to my dismay--but seriously, that whole "sit there impassively as a model breaks her ankle" thing creeps me out; good for him for being a good fashion citizen.
@katastic: I don't know. I think Ophelia killed herself because she was crazy, and she was crazy because her dad used her for all of his hairbrained schemes. But that's just my opinion. I fucking hate Polonius.
@katastic: But yeah, she's deff not a role model.
