Who amongst us was not perversely enchanted by Project Runway contestant Malan Breton? There was the weird, ambiguously European accent (and the weird, non-European heritage); the perfectly-coiffed hair; the maniacal laugh. And though the dress he made for former Miss USA Tara Connor was all wrong, the guy obviously did have talent, albeit in an over-the-top, Austin Scarlett kind of way. This morning at NY Fashion Week, Malan presented a collection that was a lot less outrageous and a lot more chic, sleek and rainstorm-ready. A 10-image gallery begins below.

Ah Malan. That guy made me feel oogie on the inside. But the clothes? The clothes are not half bad.
Also, someone please tell me he didn't use the umbrella-ella-ella song for music.
I covet that red dress.
malan looked like he belonged in some old creepy victorian manor, like one half of the gay couple selling antiques in 'salem's lot'.
Not bad, I give props.
I would also wear that ivory wrap coat all the time.
He reminded me of Steve Buscemi- if Steve Buscemi played a gothy gay fashion designer.
OMG! Les Parapluies de Cherbourg! *swooooon*
Ugh horrible red pants, but loved the coat and the prim and posh dress.
I loved the blue items (jacket, dress) as well as the silver dress. Very cute!
The high-waisted pants and the boxy vinyl coat are weird. Everything else? Mmmmmm. Wrap coat, blue jacket, and Silver Surfer dress, please!
totally a fan of almost everything, save the leggings-over-sheer-hose thing going on at the feets.
Um...high waist camel-toe red pants? Stiff, detail-free shirt dresses? This is like an upscale Montgomery Ward catalog, c. 1975.
I loved Malan. I think he really needed a hug. Want the ivory coat.
Very wearable and versatile. Love that he isn't covering it all with needless frippery; I retain an illogical love for the austerity of the 90s, so sue me. Not high fashion but well played, delightfully weird guy.
@titania1285: I wear leggings over tights all the time. It's my secret shame...
I am frightened by the patent leather coat and camel toe inducing pants it is paired with. Everything else I kind of like... How is it that he got a show, exactly?
I like that it's not busy/overdone, but some of it feels very dated. Also, I think Nina Garcia would have had a cow over those red pants. Let the vajayjay breathe, Malan!
I love the "silver surfer" dress, though.
I bet it looked so much better on paper.
That white coat-black tights-black bag-poufy hair thing is what I want to look like every single day. I covet all of it.
Also on this note - Is Project Runway new tonight?! Please?!
@speculationsforschoolboys: mebbe its because i no longer live in a cold climate that this does not make sense. i have, in the past, worn tights with socks and jeans to stay warm...
too boring for me - simple & sleek i get but not this.
If Marc Bouwer had umbrellas during HIS show, then we wouldn't have had that problem.
Yawn.
Not that I wouldn't wear most of it. But even I'm bored by my own wardrobe.
@BiscuitDoughJones: I rented that movie a little while ago, but it was so silly I couldn't stop awkwardly laughing and had to turn it off. What I saw was very pretty, though, despite being so odd. Do you just have to be in the right mood? Or am I missing something?
You watch. if Obama wins, he'll become Michelle's Galanos.
I've never seen an ep of Project Runway (don't throw things at me), but I liked 95% of this collection. Which is more than I can say for any of the other ones we've seen this week...
Oh that coat is divine. Hated the hose/footwear almost throughout, but his craftmanship looks impeccable on screen. Also, those cuts throughout flatter a LOT of women.
@stacyinbean: Yes it is!
@MsDirector: Two words: Catherine. Deneuve.
That red dress is goooorgeous.
@MsDirector: It's mostly just eye candy. Which is enough for me. I think it depends on where you come down on the subject of musicals in general, and especially the conceit of all-singing-all-the-time musicals. If you don't like them and all their attendant corniness, yeah, it's probably just not gonna be your thing.
@stacyinbean: He's had a show there more than once. He was bizarrely successful coming off the show, even though he was auf'd quite early. He has a featured blog and his own webshow on the bravo website, too.
maybe i can't see in enough detail but from what i can tell this stuff is like SO POORLY constructed. i understand the dude is probably on a tight budget but could he at least have made some even pleating?
"Celebrity, sex, fashion"
I like the first two, but am so bored by the third. Guess there's a lot of it because of fashion week or something? But didn't we just have fashion week? How many are there . . . do we have to care about more than just Paris and New York?
Don't like the leggings over hose or the fit of the red pants, but overall, very nice! I could, and would, wear almost everything here to work and feel really put together and chic.
I loved Malan so very, very much. If I remember correctly, his mother was always telling him he would never amount to anything. When he was kicked off, I really did almost cry. For realz.
@BiscuitDoughJones: That, I understand, yes. She is amazing and stunning and fantastic.
@savaro: Well, see, there's the thing. I love musicals. I love movie musicals. I even love singing-all-the-time movie musicals. But this one seemed to consist entirely of bad recitative and corny, simplistic lyrics (not just the subtitles). And actors who couldn't really sing. I love La Deneuve (see above response to BDJ) but a trained and versatile soprano she ain't.
Eye candy, though, definitely. Pretty pretty colors.
I love that movie. And I cry during the Esso scene each and every time.
@WhiskeyAGoGo: oh thank heavens. I've been dying for some Tim Gunn action since he was on Daily Show the other night!
i was once walking somewhere near avenue b at night, and peered in a storefront because i noticed someone in there working at a desk (it was at least midnight, so that was odd). in the front of the store were some clothing racks, and the guy at the desk, it turns out, was malan. he saw me in the window and smiled and waved, as if i was a friend. it was very cute.
