Of the three models who appear in the pre-fall 2014 lookbook for The Row, the youngest is 39. Not only are the Olsens' casting choices incredibly progressive for an industry that practically deifies youth, but it also brilliantly demonstrates just how timeless the 27-year-old twins' style really is.
The lookbook features models Ursula Wallis, Esther de Jong, and 65-year-old fashion editor turned cosmetics line founder Linda Rodin. Their pre-fall collection is perhaps more important than other seasons for the Olsens, who won the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award in 2012. They're opening the first brick and mortar shop for The Row this summer in Los Angeles and the clothes from this collection are what will be on the racks.
With such a large part of their new business plan being hinged on this particular season, using older models for their lookbook was a risky decision. The fashion industry tends to equate youth with style, beauty, and edge. Instead, the Olsens were able to convey the elegance of their simplistic designs by showing, quite literally, that "cool" is ageless.
