America’s oldest teacher is, apparently, a 102-year-old woman known to her students as “Granny,” who teaches Home Ec skills to preschool and elementary-age kids.
People picked up an interview with Agnes Zhelesnik from education site The 74 Million. Since she was 80, the centenarian has been helping teach practical skills like cooking and sewing to kids at a school in New Jersey, where her daughter also works as an art teacher. “This is something that they’re going to use for the rest of their lives. They’re not going to have it just for today,” she said. “You’ll be surprised how they are going to remember it when they get older.” To make sure they don’t wind up covered in butter and crumbs, she hand-made aprons for all the students to wear during her classes.
“When I was a young girl, school was different–completely different,” said Zhelesnik. “We didn’t have the equipment they have today–computers, television, cameras. We didn’t have even an inside toilet!”
